Ho-ho-ho!

It's time for me to don the red-and-white suit again (sniff sniff. I
think it needs a wash) and hand out more goodies. Because that's what
we're all here for: free games! Don't be shy about it; we know its
true!

I can imagine this one won't be popular amongst the American
readers, since I don't think Asterix & Obelix have made much
of an impression on western shores. But if you're from JB3G6
Europe, you're probably quite familiar with this duo. XXL GKDIK
Romastered is a surprisingly fun adaptation of the comic
(techically, its a remaster of an older game, but I never
played that one so this version was new to me). I always
enjoyed the Gaulic duo so playing them in high-res was a

I borrowed a co(lleague/worker)'s original that were on like six CD-ROMs
around Y2K. It was an OK game. I will pass. I am more interested in the
newer one.

I had the five-disc version, which came in a cardboard sleeve with
spots for six disk held together with glue that got all over the
discs. I remember being royally pissed off that Bioware (or Interplay)
cheaped out by using a cardboard disc holder rather than splurging for
a multi-disk jewel-case.

The six-disk version that came out later was the one that included the
expansion disc... which now makes me wonder: was that the plan from
the start? Even in 1997, was Bioware holding back content with the
plan on selling it later? They truly were a developer ahead of their
time!

I still have my original discs. The cardboard sleeve is long gone, and
good riddance!

I'm reminded of a brief essay (reputedly) by Neil Gaiman on that very
topic:

"I have very mixed feelings about Americans disliking the

Played the original a lot, it's one of my favourite games...but I
haven't tried any of the Beamdog remakes. I will do as you asked once I

It's pretty much the same game. I think the most notable new feature
was built-in support for wide-screen monitors, but otherwise I recall
the experience (I played the game back in... 2018?) being largely the
same as the '98 version. There is some additional/new content
(including an absolutely terrible intro movie that compared quite
poorly to the original) but the new quests and characters were largely
unnoticable on the whole.

Personally, as a GAME I preferred the original version, just because
the intro movie was that annoying (and because I'm something of a
purist). But it can be hard to get it Baldur Gate 98 running well on
modern hardware, so despite my qualms, I tend to recommend people use
the Enhanced Edition. It's not bad; in fact, if you loved the original
I'm fairly sure you'll like this one too. I just think the older
version is ever-so-slightly better.
