My collection isn't that impressive to look at, since I keep most of
my discs in those CD wallet/books/whatever they are called. I just
don't have the room to keep them in their original boxes.

I do actually have a handful of game boxes though. Most of them are
folded flat, but a few are still in their original box-like condition
(mostly Ultima games). But I'm too lazy to dig through the hoard to
snap pictures of them. They aren't really worth the effort, being too
few and battered to be shown. My library is impressive for its count,
not its appearance ;-)

(Sorry for the quality of the images. I grabbed the images with a
web-cam 'cause it was just easier than using a phone and transferring
them over to the PC. But I didn't take much time with the project, so
everything is a bit out of focus, dark, and grainy.)

Things of note:

- My game boxes, as noted in an earlier post, aren't really stored for
display. I just kept the ones that had meaning to me (or that I just
thought looked cool) and stashed them in the closet. So I don't have a
fancy shelf where I can show them all at once. A good number of them
are just flat-packed (I keep them all stashed inside the big box that
came with the original "Gothic", which is why it's the rattiest of all
my boxes ;-). All in all, it's not very impressive to LOOK at.

- There's also a handful of boxes that are missing from that page
(most notably "Ultima 7: Black Gate" but also a wooden boxed version
of "Oregon Trail" and the original shareware "Quake", as well as a few
others. I'm pretty sure I have the other Wing Commander boxes
/somewhere/) that I either didn't grab from the closet or the pictures
were just too blurry and I was too lazy to re-do them. ;-)

- I kept almost all my Ultima game boxes, with pretty much all the
original contents (manuals, disks, etc.) stored within them. Often
including my hand-written notes used when I played the game.

- I'm a sucker for boxes made out of metal. I don't go out of my way
to buy them (because I know if I do I'm going to keep it forever) but
when one does enter my hands, it doesn't get thrown away. Although I
should have a metal Wolfenstein gamebox somewhere. I wonder where it
got off to?

- The last few pictures are of the boxes that I keep flattened, with
the manuals and disks stored elsewhere

- Not included are all the paper sleeves used in CD jewel/DVD cases
for some PC games and pretty much all XBox/PS. I keep all those with
the manuals and dumped the plastic cases themselves.

- The disks of pretty much all the games (except the Ultima games) are
stored in 200+ CD folders. Including the floppy disks. Manuals are
stored in office storage boxes.

And that soundtrack! It is as if Ennio Morricone clawed his way out of
his grave (wait, is he dead? I just assume he is*) and decided his
magnum opus ought to be the soundtrack for a first-person shooter.

Although when it comes to the gameplay, I'm a bit less sanguine. The
moment-to-moment was outstanding, but some of the level design was
unnecessarily mazelike; a throwback to Doom-era level design that
didn't fit in well with the more realistic theming of the game. Too
often progress was dependent on finding the right secret area, and I
remember a lot of wall-humping trying to figure out what was necessary
to progress.

The TL;DR is that "Outlaws" was definitely a game of its time, caught
between the releases of "Doom" and "Half Life". Developers (and
gamers) still weren't ready for a truly cinematic-style FPS but the
genre was definitely shifting in that direction. It resulted in some
ungainly combinations; the teenage-years of first-person shooters.

Despite this, I still regard it as one of the best Western FPS games,
and definitely one of the highlights of that troubled era of gaming.

* apparently he died in 2020, so if he was in a grave back in '97,
when the game originally came out, he was doing something very strange
in there. Not that I'm grave-shaming. You do you, Ennio ;-)
