Ho-ho-ho!

I'll spare you all the next Llama carol today. That's not to say
you're not going to hear (and moistly feel!) them sing again in the
near future, but they've a bit of a sore throat at the moment and have
begged off singing today. Have you seen the length of a llama's neck?
A sore throat is no joke for them!

For those of you disappointed with the old-school games I gave away a
few days ago, well get ready for more disappointment! Because once
again I have two old games, each with two keys apiece! (I told you
this was going to be a repeat issue!) But don't worry, I'll have pity
on you all and throw in a more modern game too, if you're one of those
soulless gamers who can't appreciate the classics. ;-)

We'll start with the old games first.

---

* Math Rescue
https://store.steampowered.com/app/358200/Math_Rescue/
It's not just an old game from the 90s; it's an old
EDUCATIONAL game from the 90s. You know, the sort your
Mom would buy you instead of something like "Loderunner"
or "Mario". It wasn't as good, but it was all you had so
you played it anyway. This one's a fairly simple platformer
that teaches you basic math. (Sadly, I know a lot of adults
who could benefit from playing this today). But look, I get
it: this isn't the most popular genre so I'm not even going
to bother obfuscate the serial numbers, just in the hope that
by making it THAT much easier /somebody/ will claim them.
key #1: HI6E7-XTVQC-0J0T8 and key #2: 84DM7-PQ8ZC-588MY

* Word Rescue
https://store.steampowered.com/app/358340/Word_Rescue/
Second time around and it's more of the same, except this
time it teaches you words-type-stuff! Platform around,
matching words to pictures. Look, maybe its not for you but
surely you have some younger relatives in your life you'd
like to disappoint? C'mon, some of us paid for these games
accidentally twice! At least take one of them! Unobfuscated
keys coming up!
key #1: GYPZF-528NN-TR3K5 and key #2: GV7B0-I70EN-I3VF4

* Project Highrise
https://store.steampowered.com/app/423580/Project_Highrise/
Fine. I get it. You want a game from THIS century and MQLJG
designed with somebody who's out of toddlerhood. Alright;
I hear you. So here's "Project Highrise", which is 8G5A3
essentially a modern remake of Maxis' old "SimTower" game.
You're basically building a city in a tower, placing HFM5Q
offices and apartments and infrastructure, trying to keep
all the inhabitants happy. It's a real game! Surely you'll
take THIS one!

* Secret Bonus That Maybe Doesn't Work But Maybe It Does!
Yesterday I offered "Blade of Darkness" but due entirely to
technical issues (and nothing to do with my inability to
copy-and-paste correctly), the provided key was incomplete.
Since Ant was the first to show interest, I offered the game
to them first. But apparently they already had the game in
their library. Does that use up the key? I've no idea. But
just in case it didn't, here's the key for "Blade of Darkness"
(on GOG) in case somebody else wants to give it a try. Who
knows; it might work and you might get a free game! (That
is, assuming I copied and pasted correctly today ;-)
secret bonus key: 83U9B19999BA35F7E9

---

Four keys, no llama songs! That's not a bad haul, dontcha think? I
wonder what we'll get tomorrow. Well, there's only one way to find out
and that's to keep reading Usenet!

Until then, let me leave you with these eternal words of Holiday
Wisdom:

Ho. Ho. and Ho.

I took this one Spalls. Thanks a lot. I never played SimTower so here
is my chance I guess. My favorite Maxis games are SimCity 3K and 4K.

3D Realms published these edutainement games? I don't remember those
back then. Redwood Games? Is that related to Redwood from old
Stomped.com web site?

Did you ever play the other Sim games like The Sims, SimAnt, etc.?

other one that interests me I think.

Mostly it's just: It does what I need it to, without 17 billion extra
features cluttering things up, so it's not bloated.

Just looked at alt computer, and apparently the version I'm using came
out Jan 15, 2001. Bloat came later, but the old version does what I
need it to - it plays mp3s. v2.72

Checked Win11 machine, have a version from 2023 there, despite the
machine being massively more powerful, it takes 10x as long to load, and
takes a full 30 seconds to close after you shut it off - bloat.

I just checked mine. Nov 26 2013. V5.666

I am actually surprised it is that recent.

Technically, it was Apogee games at the time. They published a good
number of titles; a few of them were edutainment but they had a
significant number of platformers which looked and played similar to
the *Rescue titles.

Actually, yes. It's an older version, but it still checks out. I have
a large library* of digital music --I ripped all my audio CDs to MP3
years ago-- and prefer to use that over any streaming service. I like
WinAmps interface over many of its competitors, and never really saw a
need to upgrade it.

That said, any llama fixation I have predates the animal's association
with WinAmp.

It is (was) real. Personally I'd like an updated SimLife. I used to
leave that running overnight to see what had evolved. :)

They can be run on modern hardware... just not on modern operating
systems. Not without a shim like DOSBox or other virtualization
software*. Even the later updated versions for Windows** won't run,
since they utilize 16-bit code.***

But if you install DOS on your brand-new PC, you'll probably be able
to get SimAnt to run. Although I doubt you'll get sound, since your
onboard audio probably won't be recognized ;-)

Fortunately, all of the old classic Maxis games --SimCity, SimCity 2K,
SimEarth, SimLife, SimFarm, SimAnt, SimTower, SimPark, SimTown and
SimTunes -- run well in DOSBox.****

Myself, I was mainly a fan of the SimCity games, although I marvelled
at the intricacies of SimEarth and SimLife despite not finding them
much fun to actually play. But "SimCity 2000" remains the best of the
series (at least in my opinion) and I still fire it up on occassion.

* stop being pedantic; I know DOSBox isn't a virtual machine! ;-)
** for Windows 3.1!
*** at least on Windows x64. Linux is a bit more lenient, but you'll
still need a shim to run Windows software anyway.
**** you may need an updated version or use a fork like DOSBox-X for
some of them, since a number of the later games run on Windows 3.1 and
DOS share exclusions don't play well on the current 'release' version
of DOSBox.

Oh, so they'd probably work on Linux under DosBOX. That's nice.
