What time is it? Why, it's Steam Sale time! And you know what that
means! Time to bitch about Steam Sales again! It's tradition!

But honestly, it doesn't even seem like they're trying anymore. I
swear, the sale prices look like the _retail_ prices; like all the
publishers just jacked up the regular cost and then put it on 'sale'
for what it normally goes for. The savings just aren't there. All the
real discounts are only on games that have already been discounted to
hell and back for years.

I really miss the 'flash sales' Valve used to offer, when you got
massive discounts for a very brief period. I picked up dozens of
triple-A games back then for a pittance; now we're lucky to see them
down by 10 or 15%. But that's what happens when you achieve a monopoly
on a market; pleasing customers (or working to attract new ones)
becomes a lot less important. ;-)

That's not to say I didn't take advantage of the sale, but I'm pretty
sure I would have bought the games -and for pretty much the same
price- regardless of whether this 'massive store sale' was taking
place or not.

But hey, Valve is obviously trying. Why, if you play their silly
games, you can get some stickers* for your bother! Doesn't that just
want to make you rush out and visit Steam today?

* no, I've no fucking idea what they are either

They send me "this game on your wishlist is on sale" mails, I check and
they're not enough on sale to buy usually.
But that usually constitutes my one weekly email.
Except during holidays when the mail company tries to upsell me on cloud
storage, mass email capability and massive attachment sizes, plus no ads
(like there are any ads when you smtp and pop3 instead of using their
retarded web portal.)

If the sale isn't 50% or more, not buying. Especially on games with a
base price of $80 and a real price over $90, better be 80% off.

I'm excited to rebuy Hypnospace Outlaw, since its 70% off!! I'll
definitely look through some of the indie games I like to see if any
have good deals.

Yeah, same for me. A lot of the games I want are on sale right now,
but at only 30% off or so, I am going to wait. That isn't good enough.

This strategy tends to actually work if you can wait. :)

This looks like a good site to me, thanks.

Cheapest price for the games I want is Steam right now. I will check
this site out again next month when Christmas sales kick in.

Honestly, this sale probably isn't that much worse than any of Valve's
other recent sales. And if you look hard enough, you /can/ find some
bargains (for instance, you can get "Mad Max" for $2USD, which is well
worth it at that price. Or "Kingdom Come Deliverance" is also going
for $3USD; equally worthy). But most of the real bargains are for
games that are five or ten years old. Steam sales _used_ to give you
the NEWEST games at those prices (even if it was only for a single
hour during a flash sale). But the current '20% off our $79.99 retail
price' just isn't as compelling.

[All the more so since it's usually only the base game which
gets discounted, with none of the DLC on sale. Which pretty
much tells you how these companies make the bulk of their
revenue]

But that's okay. It gives us this yearly tradition of bitchin' 'bout
the sales, which is _almost_ as much fun. Just watch, we'll be doing
it again in February when the winter sale starts! ;-)

[Well, _I_ will anyway.]

How is this message off-topic? Oh, right, someone actually spending
money on games instead of getting them free off gog.

Damn Communists!

Yes, but I already bought that game back then.

I kinda tried to stop looking at the Steam sales (just how many do they
have a year now) a few years ago to get out of the habit of buying
'bargain' games that I could look at and think how much I'd saved only
to never play them or just play them for a few hours. See also Amazon
Black Friday deals, saying that I did pick up a new, well exactly the
same as the one I already had, at half price just because the current
one was getting a bit old and having two frying pans can be handy.

Saying that I have caught myself looking at BG:III and Cyberpunk but
then thinking, if I really wanted them I'd already have them and if they
are will try at a low price then this isn't that price.

As for Steam stickers, did you never partake in Panini football stickers
when you were younger!

I was never young! ;-)

But no... stickers were never anything I was very excited about when I
was.... less old. Certainly not anything sports related. (I similarly
saw little desirable about trading cards). Gimme something more solid.

Although maybe if it came with a stick of gum or something. ;-)

I bought it from a local retail store when this game just came out. Worth it. Even better was The Orange Box in a few years later.

Gummiputers, you know there's a need.

Well OK, you know that people would buy them, that's almost the same

They are still going but no where near as big as they used to be. So at
the start of a season you could an sticker album for each player in the
top division of the English football league. You then bought packs of
stickers helping to fill in each of those portrait placeholders. When
you got duplicates they went into your swaps pile to be taken to school
to trade them for stickers you didn't have. Think of it as gambling for
under ten year olds.

The Orange Box was such an awesome value. I mean, let's face it: most
of us probably bought it for "Episode Two" alone, and we would have
been fine with it. As far as I can remember, the Orange Box wasn't
going for 'full price' at the time, but was slightly less. No
surprise; it was an expansion and not a full game? And "Episode Two"
was worth that price. Anything extra, well, who really cared about
those?

Until, you know, you actually fired up "Portal" and "Team Fortress 2"
and saw the quality of both of those products. Then you looked at the
Orange Box and realized what a good deal you were getting.

I believe I briefly did the same with hockey cards around the same age,
quickly got bored and the cards ended up clothespinned into the spokes
of the bicycle to make it sound like a motorcycle (to a 10 year old
anyway.)
