It's no surprise --Valve announced their intentions way back in late
2023!-- but now it's finallly happened.* The newest versions of Steam
will no longer run on Windows 7 or 8 (or MacOS 10.13/10.14). So if you
still have a Windows 7 gaming PC, well... say goodbye to any
Steam-launched games on that system.

Time to upgrade those old Win7 machines to Linux, I guess.

* as of November 5th. Okay, I'm a bit late with the announcement ;-)

Me too even though I still have a disk image backups and VMs. I prefer
W2K though. That is the best Windows version ever!

You know, we were worried about Steam in the early days for the wrong
reasons. It looks like we will (mostly) always have access to our games,
but planned platform obsolescence in the client requires us to upgrade
our OS software beyond compatibility with the older titles. We lose our
games _that_ way. Did not see that coming.

Is it still possible to download your games with an old client? If not,
then that's the problem. That Steam insists on only its latest version.

I believe so, yes. Last week I booted my old Windows 7 PC in order to
copy some games over to my new Windows 11 box, and I let Steam update
a few games and it worked fine. I didn't do a complete install of any
games though.

Steam seems to still be working on my Win 7 machine. I installed a
game which also worked fine. It just isn't updating anymore. I am
guessing it will stop working entirely at some point.

Is Valve really going to block all gamers in older OSes? :(

No. At least, it didn't with my XP machine (I have a Win7 box still,
but I don't have Steam on it). With XP, Steam insisted it needed to be
updated to the newest version and tried to update itself whenever
connected to the internet. Then it discovered, 'Oh, hey, I can't run
on XP' and quit with a message to that fact. There was never any
opportunity to actually install games.

Presumably if you have an XP (or Win7) machine with Steam (and
Steam-games) already installed, AND it's not connected to the
Internet, you're still safe. For a while, at least. I've had instances
in the past where Steam just demanded it be connected to the internet
first before it let me play any of my games.

Because of this, there is, as far as I can tell, no way to play "Half
Life 2" on era-appropriate hardware with an era-appropriate operating
system. I know a lot of people don't care about that... but some of us
do.

Yeah. Honestly, it's fodder for a class-action. Unlawful deprivation of
property. Valve, imo, should keep legacy editions of the Steam client
available on a high-security breach only patch cycle. Has it really
changed _that_ much?

But as with most things in the industry, people probably aren't willing
to take anyone to court for games.

So now the only way to play HL2 on era-appropriate equipment is to
download Vengeance's clever DVD with its fake Steam server. I actually
have an iso of that. I hate it when companies legitimize the cracking
scene. I'm glad I hang on to such things.

Valve is practically begging the scene to find some kind of replacement
for period reproductions, which would mean cracking Steam. I don't think
Valve should encourage this. I think it's a natural consequence.

Just to clarify, I am on Windows 10 but I have a Win 7 machine and I
wanted to see if Steam still worked on that system after this thread

What property? The EULA you agreed to made it very clear you do not own
a copy of any of the games and can only play them at Valve's sufferance.

I can't say it worried me as I just thought about it as part and parcel
of as the OS progresses some older games will become unplayable. From a
practical point of view I'm just not going to do that. Now that doesn't
mean I don't think Valve should probably be a bit more creative in a
solution to cater for people who do want to play older titles.

What I didn't see was publishers just removing games for 'reasons'. How
long before some C-exec thinks it's a good idea* to remove a game solely
to boost the sales of what they've just released?

*Waits to be told this has already happened.

It's happened. Try buying the classic "Grand Theft Auto III" games now
that the "Definitive Edition" trilogy has been released. For a while,
EA did the same thing with the original "Star Wars: Battlefront" games
in favor of the 2015/20179 reboots, although they've seen relented.

Valve, though, is legally safe in this regard. Not only does their
EULA protect them, they can argue that they are still providing you a
way to access your 'property'... you just need to update your computer
and OS!

From what I understand, most of these deprecations aren't directly
caused by Valve, but by their use of Chromium as the underlying
framework in Steam. Chromium (the open-source version of Google
Chrome) no longer supports Win7/8... so Steam doesn't either. I mean,
sure Valve _could_ hack in support for older operating systems... but
they're just a tiny resource-strapped organization so we shouldn't
expect that sort of extravagance from them ;-)

That, sir, is what we call a legal gray area. There's no proper contract
there (The signatory is not receiving consideration. A purchased good is
not consideration). Software publishers and distributors over the years
have seen how close they can walk up to the EULA line without triggering
a proper lawsuit. There have been preliminary results, but not definitive
settled-law.

They don't want one. They're real careful not to trigger one. The EULA is
there to discourage one. It could all be bs.

I'd be interested to see an actual court-tested result to "They
arbitrarily took away $1,000 worth of my software purchases."

Alas, we never will. It's up to preservationists, I'm afraid. Thank
goodness for the piracy scene.
