do people use Steam groups at all? that seems to be one of those parts
of Steam that just is there with no interaction at all.

Same with these Steam points that allow me to... buy stuff for a profile
nobody ever looks at anyway...

I really get the impression that Valve thought up as Steam points as
being something with real monetary use (you get 1 point per 1 US
dollar of purchases, I think), that could then maybe be redeemed to
buy games or something real.

Except then the lawyers pointed out that it was a form of currency and
would probably cause them all sorts of legal problems, especially
given how many jurisdictions Valve operates in, so they quickly backed
away from the idea. Except now people have thousands of points and
nothing to do with it? Quick, give them useless, untradable digital
gimcracks.

[I like the profile page. It lets me quickly see how many
games I own on Steam, and how many reviews I've posted.
Although the difference between those two numbers is
disturbingly large... maybe its better if I stop looking.]

I've used Steam points to 'buy' rewards (equally useless) for good
reviews, but that's pretty much it, and mostly because I've earned so
many points I don't know what else to do with them.

I don't know. Nintendo gives me Gold Coins that translate 1:1 with a
penny (ie: 100 GC is $1 off a purchase). If they can pull it off, surely
Valve can?

I think the jurisdiction would be the United States for transactions with
me, just as they charge my state's sales tax on each purchase.

They also have an American operation, Nintendo of America, which is
likely how they manage transactions. Anyone get Nintendo coins in other
countries?

On a side note, GOG just this year (or last) started charging sales tax
for my purchases though they had not done so for years.

As Zag said it really does protect against someone who isn't active in
this group using it.

It's not a bad game but I found it difficult to enjoy as I fell for the
hype about how it played when in reality it's just a solid FPS shooter
in a different environment. I'm pretty sure that it was the last game
ever that I pre-ordered, still it came in a nice metal case so there's that!
