I'm surprised the "Deluxe Edition" doesn't come with the 2002 game
included. That will probably have to wait for the Ultra Platinum Super
Edition.

Still, kudos to GOG (and Microids) for putting another brand new game
on the service without DRM (even if it is a few days after the Steam
release). Too many publishers are terrified of the spectre of 'pIrAcY'
to make that leap so quickly.

All the more since --thanks to a surplus of freebies in the past--
none of us should be /lacking/ in games to play. Sure, I might not be
playing the latest-and-greatest right now, but I have a backlog you
wouldn't believe* that can keep me busy for weeks... months...
years... decades!

Although I can get away with it because, being so curmudgeonly, I'm
less dependent on others for fun. If you're big into the multiplayer
scene, then its more important to stay up to date so that you and your
friends all have the same game. And in order to play said game before
the master server gets shut down...

I think the oldest game I played that was actually fun for me was
Wizardry 1, which came out in 1980 so I obviously agree with you on

Adventure for the Atari 2600 came out in 1980 and that is what I was
actually playing back then. I still play it from time to time via the

I grudgingly agree, with the caveat that the game is _still_ an
MMORPG, with all that implies. So you're going to have to endure all
the MMORPGness that comes with the breed. But amongst all of those
games, "Star Wars: TOR" is probably my favorite. Largely because it
has a (comparatively) strong single-player campaign (actually,
multiple campaigns) and the Free-to-play component isn't too agressive
in upselling you.

I mean, sure, given the choice I'd still much rather play "Knights of
the Old Republic", "TIE Fighter" or "Jedi Survivor"... but SW:TOR was
a lot more enjoyable than it had any right to be.

There are microtransactions, but I didn't find that the game pushed
very hard to get me to buy any of them. You could pay for things like
more characters, a bigger stash, and the usual cosmetics, as well as
expansion campaigns. But the free bit was extremely playable without
paying a cent; you got access to the original retail game which had
several full-length campaigns built in. Each campaign was equal in
length and breadth of content to the older "Knights of the Old
Republic" games, so you can keep busy for quite a while. Neither was
the game so grindy (although, like any MMORPG, there is a fair bit of
grind) that I ever felt that I was being pressured to buy some method
to bypass it.

I think some of the more multiplayer aspects (groups, clans, whatever)
of the game may have required additional payments. I didn't really
follow up on any of those.

But as a single-player experience, it was -given it was absolutely
free- a fairly satisifactory game. The stuff I disliked about it had
more to do with the MMORPG trappings: e.g., the idiot players
constantly shouting "LFG" in the background, or the generally shallow
quests, or the way everything has to be balanced because no one player
can be allowed to overwhelm others, unlike the power-fantasies of
single-player games. But all that would have been true regardless if
I'd paid money for the game or not.

But, again, I played the game seven years ago. Things may have
changed.

I hope it is enjoyable since I love Star Wars. I played the old X-Wing,
TIE Fighters, KOTOR1 (never tried its #2), Dark Forces, Jedi Outcast,
Jedi Academy, etc. I am playing as a bad guy to be a sith or something.

Adventure was one of the first games my son got into.
Nowadays he's all against "pixel" games, but back then he loved it for
a few days.
