I finished the novel recently (much better than I'd feared), and have had
this sheepish desire to watch all the Starship Troopers movies in order
(only seen the first) for awhile now. A few of the sequels have just been
added to Prime Video, so the time might be now! Thx for the headsup!

I don't think I've even seen 2 or 3. I was a big fan of the book, I
enjoyed the movie, but not so much to watch any of the others (I think)
are they any good?

2 and 3 are crap, even for direct to video. The director of #2 was the
writer of #1 who played the criminal that got executed in it. #3 IIRC
was the second DP of one of the prior ones. #3 was one of those "We'll
just film it in complete darkness so no one will see that we didn't even
have change dug up from the couch to finance it".

4 & 5 were pretty bad too, but because they were animated, I gave them
more of a pass. They were more obviously aimed at the younger-set, so
the shallow characters, story and dialogue seemed more appropriate.
The visuals were okay.

I wouldn't go out of my way to re-watch them, though. Frankly, the
entire movie franchise is pretty terrible.

(IMHO, obviously. It's all subjective. If you like the movies, good
for you; I'm glad you had more fun with them than I did!)

Just objectively though, assault rifles with them getting point blank
range made exactly zero sense, so enjoyment was simply not possible.

Yes.

There was a 2005 first-person shooter released by Empire called -ever
so imaginatively- "Starship Troopers". It... wasn't very good. The
level design was humdrum, it took too long to put down even low-level
enemies, and the overall design was just poor. Its visuals were
above-average for its time, but don't stand up that well today. The
only thing it did somewhat well was that it gave the impression of
there being a giant swarm of bugs out to get you (even though, in
practice, you really faced off against more than five or six arachnids
at anyone time. AFAIK, it's not available for digital download though
(and probably would have issues running on modern hardware/OS anyway).

(There was also a similar game released around the same time on iPad
but I never played that one).

More recently, there is "Starship Troopers: Extermination", which is a
multi-player FPS (there's a half-baked single-player mode too). It's
rather glitchy and -for reasons I can't easily express- just doesn't
/FEEL/ like "Starship Troopers." But it's available on Steam, if
you're interested.

Finally, while it's not of the action genre, there are also a couple
of action/strategy-titles. The first was "Starship Troopers: Terran
Ascendency", released in 2000. It's a tactical-strategy game, similar
in gameplay to the "Myth" games. It's aged (and not available for sale
anywhere) but I think it still holds up pretty well. A more modern
version, "Starship Troopers: Terran Command" (available on Steam) is
something of a recreation of that classic, but I didn't have much fun
with it.

There might be others, but if so they're pretty niche. For some
reason, the IP never attracted that much in the way of video games

Honestly, I enjoyed the movie more. At least it had the novelty of its
designs to keep it afloat. But ever since Verhoeven, every Starship
Trooper license has re-used his bugs and - while they're cool looking
and all -- it's getting a bit tired to see the same bad guys over and
over again.

[And to make it clear, I didn't really like the movie. I
just liked it _more_ than I did the 2005 game.]

I got that first retail game for free from Microids back then. I don't
remember how and why, but hey. Too bad they won't give me this one. :-P
Anyways, I remember it being pretty, but it was boring compared to other
RTS games! I'd rather replay SimAnt. :-P
