Shadow of the Erdtree isn't faring well on Steam user ratings.
Bugs, glitches, people complaining it's too hard (far more of this) or
too easy.
I don't even have it, but I've been hit by one of the bugs. Co-op is
sometimes causing me to get kicked from the game with a message
"Inappropriate Activity Detected."
I've been able to get back in immediately fortunately, but others
haven't been so lucky, and can't even launch the game. Apparently it's
been going on since release day, even though I just started running into
it today.
I think I'm being summoned as a blue (aid against invader) to the DLC,
which since I don't have can't be there. I can't prove it of course as
I just get the message that I'm being summoned right before I get kicked.
There's apparently a number of other bugs and glitches associated with
it as well.

What a pity. I don't play buggy games. Played Daggerfall for about 4
hrs but never did anything serious. Since then I've never forced myself
into a corner again by playing an undocumented game. Elden Ring seems
good so far. I tell my friends it's too tough but that's only to keep
them from shanghaiing my PS4. I have one question: how much better is
it with a Playstation Plus subscription?

Semi-facetious question: Were you enjoying yourself at that moment?

The general opinion seems to be "it's fun and what we wanted, but...".
Complaints, as mentioned, focus on the difficulty and stability
issues.
While there's a lot of 'git gud, scrub' comments against people who
have issue with the difficulty, apparently the DLC is much more
ruthless than the main game, with even highest-level characters easily
getting trounced. I'm sure as players adjust and develop new tactics
this issue will be less of a concern, but it does appear that -even
for hard-core fans of the game- the learning curve on the DLC might be
a bit too steep. From Software (the developers) are fairly good about
fixing their game though.
The bugs are an unfortunate but sadly normalized part of modern
gaming. Like pretty much all modern software, it sounds like this DLC
was rushed out to market too early. But, again, the developers are
active in pursuing these problems.
Are the negative reviews fair? Absolutely. But should they be a sign
to avoid the game altogether? No. Ultimately, I have confidence that
the DLC will become everything its fans hope for. It's not there yet
though. So give it a few months before buying.
(Honestly, that should be standard practice for any modern game. Never
buy anything on day one).
This sort of launch stuff never bothers me, as I rarely play a game
immediately on launch. No doubt they are working hard on repairing bugs.

Maybe this would help for the difficulty:

Doesn't look like it is possible to get a refund or select just the
DLC, only EldenRing. Oh well. I will never play it.

I'm not too concerned about the difficulty. FromSoft games DLCs are
always a huge bump in difficulty, as if saying "Oh the main game got
too easy for you? Here try this!" (I never did even get very far in
DS2's DLC due to the insane difficulty, but did managed to finish DS1 &
DS2's, barely.) I've tried to avoid many spoilers, but there's some item
that you're supposed to collect a bunch of that somehow lessens difficulty.
I expect the ratings will go up again after people figure the ways to
lessen difficulty, and the bugs get fixed. There's still the chainsaw
glitch if people find the game too hard, though it looks pretty hard to
pull off as well, and I'm not into exploiting bugs. Exploiting game
mechanics, yes, but that's different.
I am finding my current play through far too easy... other than dying to
gravity. I'm still working my way up, a bit past 2/3 of the way to the
end. I'm trying to skip stuff I don't need, but it's hard. I'm also
taking my time helping lots of people in co-op which is my true love of
the game.
The DLC is only accessible practically at the end unless you've got a
death wish to get there early, which may also be happening, or people
jumping right in with an old character without having re-familiarized
themselves with the game.
I did notice some of the promised features that were supposed to come in
that DLC readiness patch aren't active too, so yeah, a bit rushed.
Unfortunately as you say, to be expected, but still perhaps worth
complaining about.
I haven't been kicked for "IAD" since I turned off the Blue Cipher
(summons automatically to people being invaded.) So that'll probably go
away when I get around to buying the DLC. FromSoft's multiplayer code
has always been pretty trash, so that might not get fixed. It's already
evident that they had some problems with summoning due to some
restrictions on it placed in the DLC readiness patch.
