The hype for this game (well, the original edition) was enormous on
release, with many claiming it would be the next sandbox-sim like
"Deus Ex" and "System Shock". But it was so limited in comparison that
these claims pretty much fell apart once you played it. I often
hesitate to make claims of 'consolitis' being the cause, but I think
in this case it would be quite merited; the hardware of the time
(especially the limited memory) resulted in a much weaker experience.

"Bioshock" wasn't without its good points; it's take-down of Randian
beliefs was on-point, the game's aesthetics were impressive (if not in
the least bit realistic) and the water effects were top-notch. But the
gameplay was unspectacular, with far too much reliance on the "ooh,
there's an oil pit I can light on fire" environmental trickery to
carry the game.

The "Remastered Edition" was incredibly disappointing, since it was
largely bringing the console editions up to the quality of the PC
version. On the PC, it's hard to even notice any changes. It's still
the better version to play but if you've the older edition already,
there's no real need to go out and replay the newer.

Valve only allows you to review games you own (and have played) on
Steam. So I'll let you logic out the solution on your own. ;-)

Which is a shame, because there are a lot of games in my Steam library
that I have played -and could justifiably review- except I played them
outside of the Steam environment. I don't disagree with Valve's policy
--it attempts to prevent bots from flooding the storepages with bogus
reviews made by people who never played the game-- but I could
probably triple the number of reviews if it wasn't in place.

Think of all the people I could bore with my long-winded verbiage!
Such a lost opportunity.

I only played its playable demo. I liked it. I know it is not good as
System Shock 2 which I enjoyed a lot. I couldn't get into System Shock 1
due to its awful controls. I still need to try its re(master/boot) or
whatever it is.

OK, so I should play the remaster since I only played its original demo
back then. My PC can handle the remaster from its requirements. GoG gave

I love superheroes even City of Heroes (and Villains to be the bad
guys). Flash (2023, not 2024) was bad even it had cool Batman scenes.

;) I remember watching it the first time on local TV broadcast back in
the 90s. I saw it again on DVD and still love it. I also saw the cartoon
version. It wasn't good though.

One of the disappointments that stood out was the early gameplay footage
showing the interesting use of traps and the environment. The problem,
it was just easier to shot them in the face so why bother!

I actually enjoyed BS:3 far more as my expectations, and price point,
where much lower. I wouldn't say it was a great game but more than worth
the £5 I paid for it.

As I understand it, a REMASTER uses the original game code and just
changes what they can, usually the visuals and maybe the controls. A
REMAKE completely rebuilds the game in a new engine, but is otherwise,
mostly the same game. A REBOOT also recreates the game in a new engine
but also takes it in an entirely new direction thus making it a new
experience.

If I have those definitions correct, that would make System Shock 1 a
REMAKE.

That was frequently a problem in many games that used environmental
traps. Sure, they were neat when you could use them, but too often the
enemies wouldn't co-operate and you'd either have to work to get the
bad-guys into position so you could 'trap' them, or you'd spring the
trap and it wouldn't be as effective -whether in times or resources-
as just shooting them.

[I'm suddenly reminded of that scene from the movie 'Austin
Powers', when big-bad Dr. Evil insists on trapping the hero
in a small room with sharks, while his son insists, "Just
shoot them!"]

The alternative, of course, is to make the traps so obvious and common
so the enemies /can't/ avoid them because they're all over the place
(a tactic used by "Dark Crusaders of Might & Magic") but then the
ridiculous world design destroys any immersion (who lives in a house
where every floor is covered in oil and every wall covered with
spikes?)

Too often environmental traps become a game's core gimmick, and
frankly, it's not a very exciting or novel gimmick at that.
Ultimately, all those traps aren't much different from the old
exploding barrel trope that has been with us since 1993. The only
difference is that instead of just shooting the barrel and watching
the gibs fly, you have to switch to a specific weapon or tool to
trigger the trap. It's just more effort for the same effect.

Bioshock 3 was a generally better experience, even if it did suffer a
lot from corridor-shooter linearity. (I know it's supposed to be an
open-world sandbox, but it's really not). There was less emphasis on
environmental traps, the worlds were more open and the combat more
frenetic. It largely suffered in world design and aesthetics. The
first "Bioshock" is a better game when it comes to its story and
visuals; "Bioshock Ultimate" is just more fun to actually play.

But overall I still think they're both of them fairly average
shooters, not worth a lot of the hype and praise heaped upon them.

There's really no hard and fast rule, although I generally don't
disagree with your definitions. But, for instance, the recently
released "Dark Forces" described itself as a "Remaster", even though
it used an entirely new engine.

Also, reboots aren't limited to recreating a game; often, they just
take some of the characters and general ideas of the game and
represent it in a new way. This might go so far as change the game's
genre entirely (for example, "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time")

The TL;DR is that the words are used fairly interchangably in the
industry and if you try to insist on specific definitions you're going
to be incredibly frustrated. Marketing cares not for your definitions
;-)

Actually, in Japan Nintendo (and other software companies) have had a
lot of influence on its copyright and patent laws (which are
significantly different from that of the West). A lot of Nintendo's
(and Capcom's, and Konami, and the rest) seemingly overbearing
behavior when it comes fighting its fans about tribute games, and
streaming, and mods is a result of that difference. The copyright
holder has a lot more power of what can be done with their IP in
Japan, and things like fair use are much more restricted. And
Nintendo, Sony, and the rest have pressured politicians to keep it
that way, or change it to their advantage.
