A colleague is offering to sell me their old Sony PSVR headset for an
exceptionally low price. Despite my frequent rants against VR, I have
to admit I'm somewhat tempted. I know I won't use the thing very much,
but... well, the price is pretty good, and who am I to turn up the
opportunity of adding another gadget to the collection?
Apparently the thing actually works with PCs, albeit requiring
third-party hacks. It's not entirely clear, though, if 'works' means
anything more than 'connects and technically you could do VR stuff' or
actually means, 'hey, plug this fucker in and you can play VR games on
Steam'. More research will be needed. I have to say, I am sort of
interested in seeing Elite Forever in VR mode. ;-)
It would require me to - at least temporarily - unplug one of my
monitors so I could use the HDMI port for the PSVR headset. Can I
really survive with only THREE monitors?!? ;-)
It also depends on the condition of the device. I've been told its in
working condition... but if it's all yellowed with chewed-up foam and
sweat-covered, I'm not sure I'd want it. ;-)
Has anyone tried the PSVR on PC? Should I even bother?

Just how discounted are we talking? You can get a refurbished one from
gamestop for $80, less than that just used from ebay.

Not I. I tried my Quest 2, but my computer wasn't up to it at the time.
I still need to get around to trying it with the new setup. Fallout 3
& 4 and Skyrim supposed to be pretty fun in VR. I'm not sure they'll
work with non-PC VR as when I looked last time it didn't seem to be
possible, but I've read compatibility has been improving.

There's your answer.

Not sure you are as tough as your caveman ancestors with their single
monitor?

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky
dirty old man.

No, that's a logical, practical answer. This is not the answer he is
looking for. *jedi hand wave*

Definitely not. One of my displayport cables died last week and I was
freaking out because I was forced to go without one of the monitors. I
believe 'I can't live like this!' was uttered more than once. Not
entirely seriously, sure... but not without some truth to it either
;-)
Update: the device in question was sweat-stained and rickety, with
cracked plastics. I politely declined the offer.

Apparently Sony is soon releasing an adapter for the PSVR2 so it can
more easily connect to PCs, specifying support for Steam games in
specific. Not that this would have helped me -the device I was offered
was a first-generation PSVR headset- but it indicates, should a PSVR2
ever cross my path, I won't have to worry about it working with PC
games.
Although, Sony reminds us, all the best features of the PSVR2 headset
(HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic
feedback) remained lock to the Playstation 5. Well, at least until
the hackers get around to bypassing Sony's restrictions, that is.
