I've used SAMBA for a very LONG time with Linux.
I mean from WAY back.

Just can NOT get it to work right on Manjaro - and
I've tried every trick I know and can think of.

The share DOES show up - but in the end you just
CAN'T sign in ... always some ill-defined auth
error.

Currently had to resort to the No File Security
system. THAT works ... but ........

SAMBA has *lots* of options, fine detail. It's
really the Better Way these days.

Could it be a version mismatch? I know that in my case I have an old NAS
which supports an older version of samba, and when trying to access it
from a newer linux, I have to add or edit something in smb.conf to make it
talk the old smb standard. After doing that, everything works.

Have you tried enabling additional log level settings, to try to get more
info?

Some older SMB protocol is deactivated by default these days for
security reasons. Check whether that's the cause of your problem.

If it is, then modify the samba server configuration file to enable
support for the older (broken) protocol.

Don’t just blindly copy and paste stuff into your smb.conf, or leave a
whole bunch of lines in there from the default file, without understanding
what they do. Keep your config lean and clean, and you will have fewer
problems.

In particular, there are two options I have found that are likely to cause
trouble with various versions of Windows clients: “server min protocol”
and “ntlm auth”. You may need to loosen these up to cater for older
Windows versions.

Also, it can be useful to set your logfile name template to something like

log file = /var/log/samba/log.%I-%R

This shows the IP addresses of clients trying to connect, and what
protocol version they are using, in the file name. This can be quite
illuminating.
