A computer is a universal machine. It can do a thousand different things,
with the right programming. Why limit yourself to a product that does only

Well the problem is that no computer I have ever bought 'just does what
I want'.

But I have found that the least labour intensive path to that is a cheap
secondhand business computer and Linux Mint.

Obviously, depending on what you want, other methodologies might be better.

I 'just bought' a cellphone that ran off wifi and could receive text
messages, that being all I needed at that point.

I think %'s point is that you didn't build the kernel from scratch, you
installed a prebuilt disto.

Although to be fair, I spent yesterday at my Mum's and tried to scrap
her old Windows 10 PC for a new windows 11 PC. I've never used a Windows
11 PC. I lost the will to live, when the log on process demanded a PIN
and a Microsoft account, no way could she understand that with her
dementia.

I might have moved her to Linux when she had more marbles, but difficult
now.

So any slagging off of Windows is OK with me.

Mum's new DECT/GAP phone handset was irritatingly shit too, but that is
a different story. Why can't they make simple android WiFi phones, like
a smart phone, but with buttons instead of a touch screen.

Kernel 6.10 Introduced a MESA driver, Panthor, for the Mali-G610 GPU Arm
SoC. Important if you are running on an RK3588(s) machine, like an
Orange Pi 5, which I am.

It still freezes, occasionally, but is a lot better than what came before.

I'm using Kubuntu 24.04 myself and it is a very polished distribution.
If you hate Snap so much, enable Flatpak and move on. For my tastes,
Snap is quite fine.

I'm reading Neal Stephenson's new book 'Polostan'. There is a character
Fizmatov. When the main character asks him if it's an Ukrainian name he
says that he made it up after the revolution (Russian) when people were
adopting new name. He worked at the Physics and Mathematics Institute,
thus Fizmatov.

I had an elderly, disabled friend who suffered a stroke about 20 years
ago, and after becoming more house-bound, decided he wanted to get into
this whole “internet” and “computer” thing.

I was still learning about Linux myself at the time. I helped him get set
up with Windows XP. Then, after a while, I set up a dual-boot with SuSE
(which was what my main client was fond of at the time), and introduced
him to the games that came with it, which he quite liked playing.

Then it came time to replace that original machine. After talking to the
nice sales guy at the computer store, we decided he would get a dual-core
white-box AMD machine with no Windows OS. If he needed Windows, we could
come back later and get it for some suitable sum.

Instead, I installed Linux Mint, Cinnamon edition, on that machine. I
figured out how to transfer his email address book from the old XP system
into Mozilla Thunderbird. There was a bit of fiddling to find a simple app
that would play his audio CDs as soon as he put them in the drive, instead
of trying to copy them to audio files on the hard drive. All the internet
stuff he was doing before, he was able to continue doing just fine.

He did have a recurring problem where the shortcut icon I put on his
desktop to launch Thunderbird would keep disappearing. Eventually, I was
able to guide him over the phone to right-click on the Thunderbird icon in
the application menu and select the “Add to Desktop” option to recreate
the shortcut.

He died three years ago. We never did go back for that copy of Windows.

Gotta deal with that evil early during installation,
and they don't make it easy anymore, and you'd better
not have any net connection it can find.

Anyway, you CAN compile it yourself - but it's easier
to pick a good distro and then tweak it a bit after.

As for your Mum ... KDE desktop ? The look and feel
are kinda like Winders, and can be set to be even
more so. Linux Lite resembles Winders too. Kubuntu,
well, if you can stand what Canonical has done to
Linux ....

I've got a few snaps but Brave and Firefox are the two I notice because of
the warning to update. Others line Dbeaver or nmap that aren't always open
quitely get updated.

Oddly Brave is a flatpak on the Fedora machine but Firefox isn't.

Last I heard you can't anymore. If you have no internet connection, it
will create a temporary account but the moment you connect the machine
to the internet it immediately forces you to make a Microsoft account
which then replaces the temp account. The only way around that is if you
have a AD/DC on the network and your using Windows Enterprise. Then you
don't need a Microsoft account (nor do you need a Microsoft Azure/Work
account either). I could be wrong but that's what I heard last from a
buddy of mine who provisions windows machines for the company he works for.

They make it harder and harder to avoid creating the MS account, there's
still ways and means, but it's easier to install with a throwaway MS
account, then create a local account, make sure you save the BitLocker
encryption key which may get saved there, finally nuke the MS account
from the machine.
