It's been a long time since I ripped a CDDA, I don't even have an
optical drive in my computer now, but iTunes was clunkware for such a
task, use the right tool for the job as they say.

I actually don't even use Usenet binaries, anymore, I've gone legit
(but I still have a lot of pirated music from the past). Amazon's
MP3s are an acceptable quality and couldn't be easier to purchase.

I didn't see the original message, but I'll respond anyway.

For ripping, I use MediaMonkey which allows me to rip securely into a
number of formats by default. If a format is missing, it merely requires
me to download the codec online and configure the software to notice it.
MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis work without an effort, ALAC requires you to
simply checkmark it in the preferences and AAC requires you to download
the NeroAACEnc that is easy to find online.

iTunes would be used to circumvent Apple's blocks on third-party
software and sync to their hardware. However, it no longer does that
job; you need to use the free Apple Devices to sync to Apple hardware.
iTunes has essentially become useless.
