Evangelicals Are Now Rejecting 'Liberal' Teachings of Jesus

An evangelical leader is warning that conservative Christians are now
rejecting the teachings of Jesus as "liberal talking points."

Russell Moore, former top official for the Southern Baptist Convention
(SBC) who is now the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, said during an
interview aired on NPR's All Things Considered this week that Christianity
is in a "crisis" due to the current state of right-wing politics.

Moore has found himself at odds with other evangelical leaders due to his
frequent criticism of former President Donald Trump. He resigned his
position with the SBC in 2021 following friction over his views on Trump
and a sex abuse crisis among Southern Baptist clergy.

In his NPR interview, Moore suggested that Trump had transformed the
political landscape in the U.S. to the point where some Christian
conservatives are openly denouncing a central doctrine of their religion as
being too "weak" and "liberal" for their liking.

Evangelicals Rejecting Jesus' Teachings: �Liberal Talking Points'

"Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the
Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching�'turn the other
cheek'�[and] to have someone come up after to say, 'Where did you get those
liberal talking points?'" Moore said.

"When the pastor would say, 'I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ' ... The
response would be, 'Yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak," he
added. "When we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are
seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis."

Moore went to to say that he did not think it would be possible to "fix"
Christianity by "fighting a war for the soul of evangelicalism," urging his
concerned brethren to instead fight "small and local" battles like refusing
to go along with the current "church culture."

Newsweek reached out for comment to the SBC via online press contact form
on Wednesday evening.

“They reject the inerrancy of scripture, ordain women to the pastoral
office [and] hold what many would believe to be unbiblical views on
abortion and homosexual behavior.”

Walz faced criticism over his handling of the Floyd riots as he failed
to deploy the Minnesota National Guard to Minneapolis the day its mayor
and police chief requested help to quell the intensifying looting and
arson that was racking the city, the New York Times reported. Damages in
Minneapolis from the riot totaled $107 million, with over 1,000
buildings being burned or damaged, according to the Minnesota Reformer.

“It was obvious to me that he froze under pressure, under a calamity, as
people’s properties were being burned down,” Republican Minnesota State
Senator Warren Limmer recently told the NYT.

Walz’s church has also promoted dozens of pieces of leftist literature
to help its parishioners become “antiracist.” The 1619 Project, which
teaches that America is fundamentally racist, was among the titles
highlighted.

Pilgrim Lutheran Church also takes a liberal stance on issues of
sexuality and gender by sending its members to march at gay pride
parades, working to amplify the “voices of women and nonbinary/gender
non-conforming individuals,” having gender-neutral restrooms and
celebrating “coming out day,” among other initiatives.

Walz signed a bill in April 2023 that empowered the state of Minnesota
to revoke custody from parents who deny their children sex changes,
hormone replacement or cosmetic surgeries, among other interventions.

Pilgrim Lutheran Church, much like Walz himself, positions itself as an
ally of the Islamic community by encouraging its congregants through its
now-defunct Twitter account to attend meals celebrating the Muslim holy
day of Ramadan and by providing them signs to paste in their windows
wishing those around them a “Blessed Ramadan.”

Walz regularly attends Muslim religious meals and has spoken at events
hosted by local chapters of the Council on American-Islamic Relations,
according to the National Catholic Reporter.

“Satan wants to do everything in his power to separate Christians from
the one true faith,” Wendt said. “Many mainline protestant denominations
in America have fallen prey to the spirit of the age and are willing to
make any concession necessary to stay in line with an ever changing
culture.”

Trump is better than God, to some people. You can't have it both
ways, but there are those who pretend to, saying "Jesus is my savior,
Trump is my president", well, it doesn't work that way, Trump is the
antichrist. I dunno how they can imagine that God is behind that.
