I'm checking distro websites for "codes of conduct" and "diversity
equity and inclusion" statements, and came across this set of rules for
the Linux Lite distro forum.

Looks like they're afraid of the support forum becoming another brawlpit
like comp.os.linux.advocaca.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Treat other members with the respect they deserve. This should go
without saying, but treat others like you would like to be treated.

- All posts should be professional and courteous. You have every right
to disagree with your fellow community members and explain your
perspective. However, you are not free to attack, degrade, insult, or
otherwise belittle them or the quality of this community. It does not
matter what title or power you hold in these forums, you are expected to
obey this rule.

- There will be no use of profanity.

- There will be no racial, ethnic, gender based insults or any other
personal discriminations.

- There will be no public threads or posts airing grievances. If a post
or thread is in breach of any of these Rules, you must use the 'Report
to Moderator' tool in the offending thread.

- Users may not argue a Moderator decision publicly. Any and all
complaints directed at a Moderator must first address the Moderator in
question via PM. If the problem can not be resolved, then the Moderator
and user must send their positions to the forum Admin. The forum Admin
will make or change any and/or all final decisions.

- There will be no posts or private messages (pm's) meant to offend or
hurt any other member, in a manner which is offensive or inflammatory.

- Spamming is not permitted; please keep all your posts as constructive
as possible.

- In regards to supporting people, you can suggest that people read the
Help Manual (sometimes referred to as RTFM) or 'Google it' providing you
give that person a starting link to either.

- Avoid one word replies. These are not helpful.

- You must stay on topic in a given thread.

- Do not PM the Admin directly. You must utilize the Global or Local
Moderating Staff here in the first instance (see Staff link above).

- There is to be no hijacking of other threads. If you have a problem
that you need solved, please start your own thread unless it is exactly
like the one being discussed.

- Pornography, Warez, illegal Torrent discussion, may NOT be linked in
any shape or form.

- Drugs: This is an extremely difficult subject to manage - some drugs
like Marijuana whilst it may be legal in one country, it may be illegal
in another. This forum will aim to meet both views in the middle. If you
are from a country where a drug is legal, you may discuss it, post a
link to an image or video but it must be accompanied by the following
disclaimer: 'The legality of this drug differs from country to country'.
You cannot condone a drugs use or push your views onto others. Simply
state the reason for your post. If you are in a country where a drug is
illegal, you may not discuss it, post a link to an image or video. If
you are replying to a post where a drug is legal in that posters
country, do not engage in righteous rhetoric espousing your views. You
have two choices, ignore the post or report it. Before you report a
post, you must first ask what country that poster is in (if they have
not already stated). This Forum is open minded and fair and does not
take sides on this issue due to the numerous complexities it carries
with it.

- Please refrain from posting the same question in several forum
sections. There is normally one forum section which is most suitable in
which to post your question.

- Do not send private messages to any users asking for help. If you need
help, make a new thread in the appropriate forum then the whole
community can help and benefit.

- All posts are property of the poster. This forum and all web sites
owned in conjunction with this forum have the right to request
alteration or deletion of any offensive post. Posts may be deleted for
any reasons the forum Administrators deem reasonable.

- Pictures may be posted as long as they are not explicit or offensive.

- Signatures: Maximum allowed characters 900, Maximum amount of lines
6, Maximum font size allowed in signatures 12, Maximum image count 6,
Maximum width of signature images (pixels) 500, Maximum height of
signature images (pixels) 100. Signatures should not contain
antagonistic remarks or information, negative references to other
members, nor should they contain links to porn or illegal software sites.

- Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other
topics and see where your topic should go. If your topic is placed in
the wrong forum, it will be moved by a Moderator.

- If a topic is recognized as being posted in the wrong forum, or if the
post is a violation of our guidelines then please contact a Moderator
either via PM or the 'Report to Moderator' feature; please do not
respond publicly to the member - a member of staff will do what is
required upon contact. Any person/s who attempt to present themselves as
a Moderator by posting negatively to a member's topic (which has been
posted in error and requires locking or moving to another forum) will be
sent a PM warning and placed into moderation queue upon further actions.

- Any impersonation of a user from these forums, in any mode of
communication, is strictly prohibited and will result in a banning.

- Only one account per person allowed. If you create another account to
get around a PM block, you will be banned.

- When challenged to provide proof of your statement, you must provide
proof of the facts you claim to make in the form of a URL link, a quote
(in regards to quoting members on this Forum only) or legal document.
Failure to do so is regarded as spreading misinformation and is
considered a serious offense against the community. Members rely on
information to make informed decisions. You can make claims, but you
must back those claims with facts when asked to. A timely retraction on
your behalf and an apology may help to avoid disciplinary action.

- Linked and locked topics are pruned regularly to reduce page clutter.
If you have a question about where your topic went, please PM a
Moderator or Administrator before starting a new topic asking where it
went, or posting a duplicate of the original topic. We will be happy to
provide you with a link to the new location, or a reason why it was
locked and/or removed.

- Other Distros - there should not be any posts asking for help with
other distros. This includes requests for basic support, requests for
recommendations, comparisons, benchmarks and other common sense
examples. In this Forum you will receive the help you need regarding
Linux Lite but please do us the basic courtesy of posting in places on
the internet where support for other distros is more specific like their
user Forums or more broadly, places like Linux Questions dot org.

- You may have one username on the board at any one time. If you wish to
change your name, you must make a request to the Admin via a PM. You are
allowed one name change and Profile edit during your membership. We
reserve the right to merge or delete multiple accounts.

These rules are subject to change, updating and additions from time to time.

Looks like you don't like rules on web forums, even innocuous ones.

However:

"Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one."

If you don't like their rules, start your own web forum.

(Good luck!)

p.s. what kernel are you running?

The rules are long winded, verbose, and bafflingly details with regards
to drugs. But despite their length, I think they're fairly reasonable
and centred on ensuring the forum functions as intended.

The hard part is moderation, and making sure you've got good moderators.

Where "standard set" includes discussions of drugs on a tech forum, but
only if the drug being discussed is legal in your country. kook!

They're not innocuous. They're extremely paternalistic and intrusive
and controlling. You only post a litany of tech forum rules if you're
an asshole anyway. 99.9% of users are there to get a software fix.

That it is: on July 27 alone, there were 5 official kernel versions
released.

Way too many reverts of previous commits.

This! Is! Linux!

----------------------------------------------------------------
author, authors = '',[]
domain, domains = '',[]
commits = 0

lines = open('changelog_6.10.3.txt','r',encoding='ISO-8859-1').readlines()
for line in lines:

commits += 1
author = line[8:line.index('<')-1]

if domain not in domains:
domains.append(domain)

print(commits,'commits')
print(len(authors),'authors')
print(len(domains),'domains')
----------------------------------------------------------------

810 commits
401 authors
142 domains

Changelogs are handled by MS's thumb-up-ass dept 3.

Why would MS release confidential info to the FOSS dregs of the IT
world, who in any case wouldn't understand what they're looking at (ie
the moron Feeb Russell)?

I didn't notice anything of the sort while perusing the changelog, but
it was late and it made me bleary-eyed reading the rather dense text.

Yes! It! Is!

I'm happy for your enthusiasm -- makes a nice change of pace.

Why should that be confidential?

And even this is something we can agree on.

The guy manages to make a post from an address I haven't
killfiled yet, which I responded to. He then responds
to that from a killed address. This is my disappointed face.

BTW, I'm thinking of buying MS Access to test it under WINE and proton.
Is 2010 the latest version? That's 14 years ago -- are they
getting rid of it?

Didn't see the update, thanks for the heads-up.

It's compiling now.

My Fedora 40 box is up to 6.9.12 and the Ubuntu 22 and Lubuntu are 6.5.0.
They all work, which is all I'm concerned about. Fedora isn't quite the
latest greatest but the kernel does get updated frequently.

I also read parts of changelogs every week or so, usually from various
FOSS software.

Because it's their code. Nobody else has a right to it - or even a
right to know what changes they made to it - no matter what Stallman and

The clown has nymshifted nearly 70x since early 2015.

The version of Access in Office 365 is the very latest. I guess you
could call it Access 2024, but I don't know the last time it was majorly
upgraded.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/buy/compare-all-microsoft-365-products

If you're just testing, you could go cheap and get Office 2021, which I
believe is the last standalone Office you can buy.

https://www.gamers-outlet.net/en/microsoft-office-2021-professional-plus-iso

What are you going to do with it? You can hook Access up to SQLite
using an ODBC driver, and make a GUI frontend to your data in no time.

The last professional Access development I did was in 2010, using v2003
(version in place at employer).

> -- are they getting rid of it?

I've seen no reliable indication of that anywhere, ever, in 30+ years of
using MS Office.

fwiw, I first saw Excel on Windows in the 1990-1993 timeframe, when I
was working at IBM. I believe it wasn't part of an office suite back then.

It's for my folks, who are very tied-in to Access.

The question is, will Access run on Linux? Beats me, but if
proton can play high-end games on Linux, surely it can handle
Access? (Beats me, though.)

I have the installer after a chat with MS support last night. I
already have a 365 "family" subscription, but there was no obvious
place to download Access 2021. Turns out, you don't see the Windows
download links unless you're on Windows. (I guess they're afraid
of someone trying to do what I'd like to do.)

If Proton can play high-end games, just about any Windows program should
work in Windows. If they don't, it is usually because they're connected
to system files which aren't available in Linux.

I can probably supply you with the offline installer for Office 2021
ProPlus through my IceDrive account if you need it. It's 4.7GB.

Access 2003 didn't run on Wine the last time I tried it (couple years
ago). Excel 2003 did, though.

Thank you, much obliged; but as I noted, MS support got me the installer after visiting
their chat. It's the latest standalone, so MS Access 2021.

I ran the installer by adding setup.exe as an external game in Steam. Ran it with
proton. Result is it started up, but then told me that it didn't have enough disk
space, and/or the network wasn't connected. So it's .dll issues. I may have to set
it up in a Windows virt before transferring it to a Steam bottle.
