Say what you will about that, but Apple is uniquely a piece of work,
in the industry. Look at the cost of options for storage on an iMac,
and tell me with a straight face you'd buy anything, from that goofy
company.

It's not only the cost of portable and internal storage that Apple jacks up
the price on, but Apple refuses to allow the users any privacy on iOS.

If you're using only your iOS device and you want to log into your Proton
Mail account, you can't get on iOS the anonymity the Tor Project provides.

https://support.torproject.org/tormobile/tormobile-3/

"Apple requires browsers on iOS to use something called Webkit,
which prevents [ANY!] browser from having the same privacy
protections as does the Tor Browser."

The only place iOS is said to be private/secure is in Apple advertisements.
In the real world, iOS is Swiss Cheese in terms of glaringly open holes.

"The two biggest challenges Tor developers on iOS face are Apple's
requirement that all browsers use the iOS WebKit rendering engine,
and the inability to run Tor as a system-wide service or daemon on iOS."
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/01/tor-onion-browser-ios-vpn/

The result is there is no privacy nor any anonymity possible on iOS.

I can and do buy things from Apple.

Why?

Because they have and continue to work very well for me.

What's telling is that even the iMac has the Tor Browser privacy that iOS
lacks, which means, yet again for the umpteenth time, iOS lacks the privacy
that every other operating system has, such as the use of the Tor browser.

Given the iOS device is the only phone that requires a login to the
mothership just to work, I feel sorry for iOS users who desire privacy.

Remember, every single app that an iOS user downloads has their unique
AppleID tagged into that app for tracking purposes by the Apple mothership.

Now even Google does tracking - but even Google won't stoop that low.

The part you leave out:

'iCloud Private Relay is designed to protect your privacy by ensuring
that when you browse the web in Safari, no single party โ€” not even Apple
โ€” can see both who you are and what sites you're visiting.

When Private Relay is enabled, your requests are sent through two
separate, secure internet relays.

1. Your IP address is visible to your network provider and to the first
relay, which is operated by Apple. Your DNS records are encrypted, so
neither party can see the address of the website youโ€™re trying to visit.

2/ The second relay, which is operated by a third-party content
provider, generates a temporary IP address, decrypts the name of the
website you requested, and connects you to the site.

I don't have a beef with that, but it's costly, you have to admit. I
have a computer that's now three years old, that kicks much ass, and
didn't cost me an arm and a leg to assemble, even including the retail
Windows license I used at first.

Not really very much more in the grand scheme of things.

Except you had to assemble it...

....which means you had to have the expertise to assemble it.

Most people DON'T have that expertise, nor do they want to acquire it.

True, but irrelevant in that you can create an AppleID with absolutely

I know, but it's amazing how terrible preassembled Winblows computers
are. I just couldn't put the money toward a Dell/etc., I had to force
myself to assemble it from parts.

It's hardly "minimal", sunshine.

Take a look at the benchmarks.

And what makes macOS "so great" is this:

I have spent many years supporting companies and individuals in the use
of technologyโ€”primarily computers and networking...

....and while I technically still have clients who use macOS, they just
never seem to need my help anymore.

I've got a computer that is going serve me well for at least 5 years...

....and while I have the necessary expertise to assemble my own PC, I
want one that runs a (far, far) better OS than Windows or Linux.

My 4K monitor was $200 from Newegg, it works fine with Linux. I don't
game, though, so admittedly I'm not comparing quite the same thing, it
would appear, but then I wouldn't buy a Mac to game on.

OK, interesting, but what is special about macOS for that? I mean, I
realize Apple has a certain focus on these pro features, but it's not

You were talking about "Apple's offerings" which includes hardware, and
Apple Silicon Macs are what enable what I'm talking about.

Other platforms gulp power like there's no tomorrow and put out way more
heat to offer the same performance.

Arlen here is repeating his tired, old troll that tries to pin ARM
hardware flaws only on Apple when they affect many other companies just
the same. He also definitely doesn't want you to know that there are
software mitigations that address these issues.

Ah, I get you, yeah, I like the idea, frankly, of a Mac *laptop*,
because of the heat generation issue. Apple is the first to offer a
commercial ARM system. I don't need it for a desktop, but it'd be
great for a laptop. And can run Winblows in a VM, so I'd have Unix
and Win apps available. However, I don't like using laptops, so I
haven't done this, but it's just the thought.

You're aware Apple makes desktop computers too, right? The Mac mini
starts at $599.

Indeed, that'd be the one I'd buy, if I wanted macOS. The iMacs
aren't my way.

You don't even like Winblows, though, you hack it to pieces to make it
conform to your standards. You haven't gotten 11, yet. You block
updates, you turn it into a faux Linux machine in a sense, a sleeker
NT setup than is installed by default. Nothing particularly wrong
with it, I guess (kind of like Russell's Gentoo setup, weird but
functional), but I'm not a punk for using Mint, it's a kick-ass system
for a computer like I have, and how I use it.
