Only for running Windows. For running Linux on Linux, QEMU/KVM is
better. As I don't care about running Windows at home, I have no need of
VMWare.

Cool! I toyed with Win10 VMs (one 32- and one 64-bit) a tiny bit
under VirtualBox, but this would undoubtedly be a lot better. I don't
really have a use for a VM, though, with Wine existing.

Proprietary, licensed-not-sold, software is the best in the world.

Of course there's some great FOSS software, but in general unpaid
lackadaisical hobbyists can't compete with paid professionals whose jobs
and careers are on the line.

My experience under Windows is that only some software I used was paid
or otherwise commercial in nature, without the FOSS community Windows
would be far less of a robust OS platform.

The only paid software I've used is Esri. Some, like SQL Express, Visual
Studio Community, or DB2 Community are commercial.

All that I can remember paying for out of my own pocket was BDS C and
Turbo Pascal for CP/M, Brief for DOS, and Borland OWL IDE/compiler and
Kaspersky AV for Windows. I'm excluding the cost of DOS or Windows that
was factored into the hardware I've bought.

I think I did buy one game but I can't remember what it was, some medieval
deal.

I've never had a need for the Office suite or some of the other 'killer'
Windows apps. Even at work they never installed Office on the programming
machines.

My favorite example is the start menu provided to Winblows 8.x by
Classic Shell, at the time*, not the *only* option for this purpose
but the obvious one to use, and M$ is totally OK apparently, because
they get to laugh at some people who just take this, preposterous,
full screen on a computer monitor, menu.

We had to use Windows, and I got tired of the ever-changing user-interface
(fsck you very much, Ribbon). And I got tired of having to google for the new
way of doing things that were working fine for me, such as how to add header
levels (IIRC).

The Fluxbox "Start Menu" is a right-click on an empty part of the desktop,
or, in my configuration, clicking Super-M (super = fscking Windoze key).

The menu layout is an editable text file, easy to read and modify.

An excerpt:

The people being paid to produce FOSS software are the ones working for
Red Hat and SUSE, companies who believe that it is more important to
hire negroes, pajeets and trannies than to produce quality software. If
you're White, you don't get hired and if you already work there, you
don't get promoted because Tyrone, D-Von, Muhammad and Mohinder are at
the front of the line no matter how incompetent they are. So yeah, you
can disregard my comment, but the reality is that a homeless sack of
crap taking a dump in a trash can is pretty much the equivalent of the
FOSS that will be produced from now on.

Microsoft and other proprietary companies can produce?
