is certainly not a failure. And Desktop Linux is far from abandoned, the
market share progress every year. It globally very limited but it wasn't
meant to conquer the world, so nothing failed about it.

It's obvious that Linux is for real enthusiasts, Winblows serves the
public need for an OS, but is only one choice to someone like
ourselves. I get what I really desire from Mint, not from M$.

Desktop Linux is damn-near priceless, to many of its users. To many
of them, the offerings of "the big two" don't even come close.

Certainly true for me, Apple is just bonkers, and M$ is bloatware.
Mint may be "bloated" relative to another distro, but not to Winblows.
I didn't wait for Win12 to start taxing my hardware, I flushed Win11 a
year before 12's release, and put Mint on, where it belongs.

The "small market share = failure" idiocy is a favorite attack of
trolling assholes.

There are myriad examples of successful products that have a small
market share. There are literally ten's of thousands of companies and
products that are succeeding (i.e. are profitable) with less than one
percent market share.

Yeah, that's kind of what makes it impossible for Linux to be considered a
failure. There's no one entity behind it, yet tons of companies make money
through it. Additionally, even if the efforts of companies that produced
software for Linux end up not being fruitful, their efforts are not in
vain in that their code can be picked up by someone with greater
motivation who will find the success that eluded them. It's hard not to
see is as a spectacular success.

Yeah, macOS is so odd (but its Unix components are nice). Windows is
just something to sell hardware and commercial software, and games.
Linux is the only elite system, that exists today. M$ crapware has
faded, even as it's still more widely used, that don't mean shit to
me, most people don't really know how software works.

On Open Source, when you fix a problem, it tends to stay fixed.

If a default setting is inconvenient for users, it tends to get changed.

With proprietary software, the business model of the platform vendor takes
precedence over the needs of the user. Default settings are those the
vendor wants, not what would most suit users. And there is no (legal) way
to override that.
