A simple way to summarize a PhD is that it’s the receipt that shows that
one can research a topic, make a declarative conclusion about it, and then
definitively defend that conclusion against knowledgeable critics thereof.

One can hope…but invariably, they’re not actually happier in real life.
They’re just quieter about it. This merely happens to be a venue where
they feel safe to express what they constantly feel, so it comes out here.

Or equally *incompetent* peers. You don't have to have a PhD to read "vast
amounts of literature." Anyone who can read can do that. Nor do you need a
PhD for analyzation. You just need a brain and the ability to use logic.
Unfortunately most college "educated" (brainwashed) students rely on
emotions rather than logic. That's why they believe men can have babies or
that there are more two genders.

In other words they're tired of your vacuous, Junior High level insults,
your ignoring the facts and your inability to engage in logical arguments.

IAWTP.

Seriously, plonking someone because they have a differing opinion
only ensures one continues to live in their "bubble".

_I_ have disagreed with Hugh on several occasions, including
his repeated saw that Linux users are motivated by nothing
more than being cost-conscious. (Some people just don't like/trust
Microsoft.)

Huntzinger: Severe COVID-19 that requires hospitalization or intensive care
may result in cognitive deficits and other brain damage
that are equivalent to 20 years of aging.

& President Biden has Covid_19.

Huntzinger: 2021 CoVid death rates (being 20x influenza)
would result in 20x more VAERS reports.

"Excess Deaths" can't be reported anymore, it's Top Secret.

Huntzinger: US poverty rates have exploded from 33% to 11% today.

Housing affordability, including insurance, should be,
but isn't, thee debate . . . not stagflation per se.

Seattle passed i135 so that "tech bros" (i.e. "households")
earning less than 121 thousand $/year ( in 2022 Dollars )
won't have to spend more than 30 % of their _GROSS_ income on rent.

Save the tech bros, please, anything helps.

That’s fine too.

For Scott’s comment, I’m still of the opinion that there are a goodly
number of Linux users who are motivated by the cost factor, but much like
folks who drive giant pickup trucks*, they’ll be tempted to publicly claim
something else as their motivation, such as a fear of corporate monitoring.

* more mass = magically safer in crashes
* need to tow a boat/camper .. that they don’t own, but might buy five
years from now
* might need pick up something big at IKEA/Home Depot ~1x/yr
* go off-roading! (why they chose white, & never lets it dirty or even
scratched up)
* hauling a kid or two (because minivans are .. feminine)
* etc. People can say lots of things which aren’t necessarily true.

How so, when the least expensive computers are those shipping with Windows?

Case in point: Computers on sale at Office Depot or Staples. I would
wait for a cut in price to show up in the Sunday advertising supplement, then
pick out a reasonable laptop. And sometimes the price would drop again
next week, and I could go and get that money back.

I talked to one guy about their laptops, and he said they generally lose
about $100 on the laptops. (They try to get you to buy warranties...).

This state of affairs may have changed; my last such purchase was the Lenovo
Flex 14 about 5-6 years ago, and it is still in great shape, running Arch
Linux.

I did buy a 16 Gb chip to upgrade its RAM. This also fixed an internal
clicking (fan hitting wire?) that was commonly reported.

I did buy this Asus "gamer" laptop from XoticPC, and it was not cheap.
Of course I immediately shit-canned Windows and installed Linux.
It turned out to have crappy wireless, again commonly reported, even
by Windows users.

Most desktops are shipping with Windows. Unless you buy a Linux workstation
or laptop, you have to invest your own time to install Linux. Only people
sufficiently motivated will bother.

BTW, another old saw I've seen (not sure if from hh) is that Linux users
don't factor in the cost of their own time into their system's TCO. I think
folks who think that underestimate the ken of Linux users.

I just bought an off-the-shelf ITX gamer beast for the Missus. On power-on,
got the wire-clicking. Have yet to open it and fix it. Meanwhile, we gave
Windows a shot -- she looked over at my desktop, and decided she liked what
she saw better than Windows. So it's getting Linux Mint xfce, with the
possibility of letting her try Cairo-dock for a more Mac-like experience.

Seems like hh has an over-active imagination. (See my reasoning above.)

I’ve noted that, although probably more from Windows fanboys who would DIY
a white box without considering the value of their time and then try to
compare its price to a fully assembled Apple Macintosh, to declare the
latter to be grossly overpriced. Funny part of this is that a colleague
used to run his own “I’ll assemble a white box PC for you for cheaper” side
gig and he shut that enterprise down when the profit margin for him
disappeared.

That goes back to an ancient thread on Edmunds.com .. might still be in
some archive somewhere. The “need” for these sorts of vehicles just isn’t
borne out by increased trailer sales, camping, etc, which indicates some
other (more poseur-ish) motivation in play.

The OpenSUSE box I used for years is a Dell that came with Windows 7.
Theoretically it was dual boot but I very rarely used Windows. This ?
Ubuntu box came with Windows 11 but I didn't even bother with dual boot.

It's been a while since I've built a computer that did not have an OS but
that one only ran Linux. I don't have any exotic requirements so I've
found a COTS box to be more cost effective than spending hours reading
reviews and perusing NewEgg to hack something together.

That has changed a bit. 'wsl --install' will do the trick if you want
the default Ubuntu. You have to get fancy with --distribution if you want
Debian, Kali, or one of the other available distros.

The reality being that you get to spend $1300 on something that may prove
to be another flash in the pan.

Don't need a new laptop yet. Got this Lenovo, the Asus "workstation", and an
old box in cold storage in the attic.

"Good afternoon, madam. How may I help you?"
"Good afternoon. I'd like a FrintArms HandCannon, please."
"A--? Oh, now, that's an awfully big gun for such a lovely lady. I
mean, not everybody thinks ladies should carry guns at all, though I
say they have a right to. But I think... I might... Let's have a look
down here. I might have just the thing for you. Yes, here we are!
Look at that, isn't it neat? Now that is a FrintArms product as well,
but it's what's called a laser -- a light-pistol some people call
them. Very small, as you see; fits easily into a pocket or bag; won't
spoil the line of a jacket; and you won't feel you're lugging half a
tonne of iron around with you. We do a range of matching accessories,
including -- if I may say so -- a rather saucy garter holster. Wish I
got to do the fitting for that! Ha -- just my little joke. And
there's *even*... here we are -- this special presentation pack: gun,
charged battery, charging unit, beautiful glider-hide shoulder holster
with adjustable fitting and contrast stitching, and a discount on your
next battery. Full instructions, of course, and a voucher for free
lessons at your local gun club or range. Or there's the *special*
presentation pack; it has all the other one's got but with *two*
charged batteries and a night-sight, too. Here, feel that -- don't
worry, it's a dummy battery -- isn't it neat? Feel how light it is?
Smooth, see? No bits to stick out and catch on your clothes, *and*
beautifully balanced. And of course the beauty of a laser is, there's
no recoil. Because it's shooting light, you see? Beautiful gun,
beautiful gun; my wife has one. Really. That's not a line, she
really has. Now, I can do you that one -- with a battery and a free
charge -- for ninety-five; or the presentation pack on a special
offer for one-nineteen; or this, the special presentation pack, for
one-forty-nine."
"I'll take the special."
"Sound choice, madam, *sound* choice. Now, do--?"
"And a HandCannon, with the eighty-mill silencer, five GP clips, three
six-five AP/wire-fl'echettes clips, two bipropellant HE clips, and a
Special Projectile Pack if you have one -- the one with the embedding
rounds, not the signalers. I assume the night-sight on this toy is
compatible?"
"Aah... yes, And how does madam wish to pay?"
She slapped her credit card on the counter. "Eventually."

And here’s something more for RonB, namely a solid medical study with a
sample size of nearly 46 million vaccinated adults, which is compared for
assessing if there’s any increased incidences of heart attacks or clots
from mRNA vaccines:

<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-49634-x>

TL;DR for homeschooled trolls who lack a PhD:
no increased risk of heart attacks or clots for mRNA vaccines.

Yes, all of our “died suddenly - could only have been the evil vaccine!”
fear-mongers owe a lot of folks an “I was _very_ wrong” apology…

It didn't happen like that at all, of course.

She was preparing to toss a pot of boiling/steaming water on the
friendly cops who were there to help her. She could've just moved it to
another eye on the stove. Instead she picked it up and carried it
toward them and never let it go, while asking "Where you goin'?" and
then babbling "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus".

https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/22/us/sonya-massey-police-shooting/index.html

She was DEFINITELY preparing to douse them with it.

Cops can't win with racist, cop-hating negroids who disguise their
murderous, ill intent.
