There is no doubt that upgrades are faster with Linux, but upgrades from
one stable version of a distribution to another is not usually seamless.
The efforts Linux Mint's developer has made to ensure that tching from one
big release to another is commendable because there are way too many
stories of disaster online to count. Windows generally upgrades well, from
something like 10 to 11, in my experience.

Of course it does. That’s why you don’t have lots of people staying with
older versions, because of the pain of moving to newer ones, do you?

Oh wait, you do.

The only time I upgraded one of my Linux Mint machines (from 18 to 19, I
believe) it went smoothly, but I personally would rather back up my data and
do a clean install. I like "starting over again." A lot of Windows users
seem to do that as well — as I've seen a lot of issues with upgrading
Windows from one version to another. (But I know less and less about Windows
every day, and that's by choice — so maybe this has changed with newer
versions.)

I recall doing a Linux Mint upgrade on my dad's laptop a while back and
following the instructions. After the upgrade, it still worked and allowed
him to log in, but everything was a mess. I didn't even know where to
start to fix it.

If you have issues, you can do a complete Linux reinstall. You can save most
settings if you put /home on its own partition.

Not saying that's ideal, but I do it.

By the way, I've never upgraded Windows from one major version to another.
Install from scratch.

It could be that I'll need to reinstall clean, to get a future upgrade
to Mint, but that'd be a minor inconvenience, to not have to run
Windows. Not like I never reinstalled it, either.

/home on its own partition is the way I'd do it if I were determined to
keep Linux exclusively. This way, you reinstall from scratch yet lose none
of your important files or settings.

Mint is an odd one, in that I don’t think they recommend upgrading per se.
They want you to do a clean install each time.

It is still a nice distro, which I have set up for various non-Linux-
expert friends.

It wouldn't bother me, much. A lot of people say the same thing with
Winblows, for that matter, that it's better to do a clean install.

Actually Linux Mint does have an application called mintupgrade, that you
can install specifically for upgrading from major release to major release.
You would have to do it in two steps — for example, from 20.3 to 21.0. Then
from 21.0 to 21.3.

https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/upgrade-to-mint-21.html

I've never used it. It's pretty easy to just back up your data and do a
fresh install.
