I do virtually all my own manual labor, house cleaning, toilet

Mexican tree service once.

I didn't even know that. Back when I was a kid (a long, long time ago) CEOs
were people who worked their way up in the company. But sometime (in the
80s, I believe) some "brilliant" moron got the idea that "managers" from any
corporation could be plugged into any other corporation — no matter how
different the product line. I guess that's what happened with Apple. It's
become the "norm" now.

I've spent a good chunk in my life wondering if Steve Jobs, born exactly
twenty-four years earlier than me, might have been of similar or like
mind. If he were, I would imagine that he brought in John Sculley (the
CEO in question) because he genuinely thought that it was the right
thing to do, at least to help in the marketing department. Little did
Jobs know that the move would end up eventually getting him removed from
Apple altogether.

The sad part is a competent black person has the suspicion they were a DEI
hire hanging over their head. This goes back to the '70s but a friend
introduced a colleague as 'Henry Token'. Henry actually was sharp and a

I think I've heard the name John Sculley but really didn't (and don't)

Whenever I worked with people of other races (oops... other... somethings?
.... the "science" you know) I treated them exactly like I treated everyone else.
It made MY skin crawl when others would patronize them. If it made my skin
crawl, you can imagine how it affected them.

I remember one time when Frank Robinson (a great outfielder for the Orioles)
was asked (for the 400th time) "how does it feel to be a successful black
manager?" He finally said, "I would just like to be known as a successful
manager," (or words to that effect).

She climbed the ladder in Lucent and was relatively successfully. HP
wasn't in the greatest shape when she took over but she oversaw the merger

Mark Hurd took over. He turned the company around until Jodie Fisher, a
4th rate actress, accused him of sexual harassment. That was never

Well, I've always found their history to be the most fascinating for
someone who is interested in technology. I feel the same way about IBM,
though for different reasons. While Apple's history is like a soap
opera, IBM's is a manual on how not to run your company.
