The NVidia proprietary module, always indicated as being a "taint"
to the Linux kernel, is now going open source.

The user still has a choice of installing either the proprietary
or the open source version. In Gentoo this is accomplished by
specifying the USE flag "kernel-open." (See also below.)

Why are they doing this?

The answer is clear. NVidia is the universal choice for AI
(the popular rage) and AI developers/implementers want GNU/Linux.

That's correct. They don't want no stinkin' Microslop. They
want GNU/Linux.

Ha, ha, ha, ha! The whole world says "We want Linux! We want
Linux! Microslop can fuck off!"

Therefore, NVidia has no choice but to release their code as
open source to avoid the dreaded "tainted" label.

However, the FOSS Nvidia is only for Turing, Ampere, and above.

I have Turing (TU116) and I was interested in using the open
source version. But to my great surprise, the open source module
requires the kernel parameter MMU_NOTIFIER which in turn
requires that KVM (kernel virtual machine) be enabled.

Why the fucking fuck do I need to enable a virtual machine
just to use a graphics driver? I ain't got no stinkin'
virtualization on my system.

I have to first enable virtualization in the BIOS and then
re-compile the fucking kernel just to get the NVidia FOSS.

NVidia is fucked. For the present, I'll stick to proprietary.

With proprietary, I get 5,600 FPS at 2K resolution, and that's
fucking good enough.

Other side of Feeb piehole: "AI is for Ignoramus Assholes"

ergo, GuhNoo/Linux is for ignoramus assholes.

I could've told you that 20 years ago.
