What Caused Such a Widespread Tech Meltdown?

There have been two issues affecting Microsoft systems in quick succession,
adding to the confusion over a global outage.

An outage has hit computers around the world, affecting airlines,
hospitals, retailers and other businesses. So how did that happen?

At the heart of it, there have been two issues in quick succession
involving widely used Microsoft systems, and some users may have been
affected by both of them.

On Thursday, some Microsoft clients in the central United States,
including some airlines, were affected by an outage on its cloud service
system, Azure. Microsoft’s cloud service status page indicated the
company had identified a preliminary cause.

Some users may still be unable to access certain Microsoft 365 apps and
services, including Teams video conferencing. The company was aware of
the issue “affecting a subset of customers,” a Microsoft representative
said in a statement. “We acknowledge the impact this can have on
customers, and we are working to restore services for those still
experiencing disruptions as quickly as possible.”

(Ah the joys of applications in the "Cloud.")

Separately, on Friday many Windows devices experienced problems involving
CrowdStrike, according to the Azure status page. “We’re aware of an issue
affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software
platform,” according to the representative. “We anticipate a resolution
is forthcoming.”

That outage was caused by a flawed security update by CrowdStrike. George
Kurtz, the company’s chief executive, said in a statement that it was
“actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single
content update for Windows hosts.” He added: “This is not a security
incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a
fix has been deployed.”

The issue appeared to be with an update to CrowdStrike software called
Falcon Sensor, according to Lukasz Olejnik, an independent cybersecurity
researcher and consultant. An updated fix of the software has been sent
to computers, but Mr. Olejnik said outages would probably persist because
it was not clear how to fix the huge numbers of computers that had
already been affected.

A big part of the problem lies with the current suggested solution, which
is to reboot each computer manually into safe mode, delete a specific
file, and then restart the computer normally. Security experts said that
while it is a relatively simple process, there is no way to automate it
at scale.

“There is a workaround, but it requires manually tampering with Windows
systems files in recovery mode,” Mr. Olejnik said. “Such practice is in
general not advised ordinarily, as mistakes may cause other problems.”

That leaves affected organizations with a major quandary: how to raise
the huge numbers of qualified professionals to go through and update the
computers one by one. It could mean that even with the problem known and
a patch sent, systems outages could persist for much of the day, if not
longer, according to experts. Those with organized and well-staffed
information technology teams could potentially fix it more quickly, said
Mr. Olejnik.

How does that error even happen? Wouldn't the program be able to access
any files it made? Or is it a issue with some Windows process creating a
buggy cache file??

I don't find M$'s code to be that wonderful.

This is not just servers. Any Windows box running Crowdstrike Falcon can be
affected.

And BTW, Windows server is exactly the same OS as Windows desktop. There are a
few registry settings that are different. That is all.

In fact, back in the Windows NT 4 days, it was possble to change the desktop
into a "server" by changing a single registry setting. You could then install
SQL Server, Exchange, etc.

Anyways, the fix for this is to boot into safe mode, go to
windows\system32\drivers\crowdstrike and delete c-0000029*.sys. Reboot.

Is MS paying you to make yourself look unrealistic? Linux is provably
better than Windows NT-64bit-modern-version, but people accept Windows
as standard, one can like Jeff stick with one old version that doesn't

The thing is, a bad setting when installing of a single application
should not be able to take down the whole OS. That's just crazy.

No, the Microsoft 365 problem is a separate issue. M$ screwed up the
Central US Azure node.

Sez you. It's not faster or better looking or more stable or easier to
use than Windows. Manual installation vs Windows is probably a wash.
*Maybe* - depending on the distro - Linux uses marginally less hardware
resources than Windows, but the extremely low cost of memory and hard
drive space makes that a moot point.

It has some advantages for setup and development of non-GUI software,
but WSL generally removes that advantage by putting a Linux kernel and
bash shell and even graphical Linux apps one click away. Plus there's
MSYS2.

You can't beat the flexibility and scalability of Linux, so if you're
into tinkering around and switching panels and login managers and window
managers and desktop environments willy nilly, Linux is the only game in
town.

For some, the Microsoft Corp and their insistence on telemetry is reason
enough to not use Windows. As is the closed source.

For me, the hobbyist (cr)apps endemic to Linux are a turnoff. It's a
big compromise I'm not willing to make (but I do like to support
small/one-man developers, like the Taiwanese guy who codes Notepad++).

You are making my argument for me while supporting M$ in creating
"telemetry" that is trespassing in people's hardware space. And I
paid $200 for it? Wow. Linux for free or voluntary donations to
organizations sounds like a pretty convincing deal, to me, I can run
apps to replace everything except freakin' Usenet (and could with that
app too, I just don't wish to). I think people who want good value
know Linux.

Why is telemetry in quotes? It's not trespassing, since to use Windows
you have to give MS permission to collect whatever data they say they're
collecting.

Do you know what personal data is being sucked off your Linux system by
all the FOSS apps you run? No you don't. Feeb didn't either, until I
clued him in that cooledit phoned home when it was first installed and
sent some hardware specs back to the developer.

Free Linux isn't a cost worth bearing. It's fun to tinker with
sometimes, but day to day? Not a chance.

6 months ago I setup Win7 on an older computer (that I donated). I
could still be happy with it, but a lot of current software isn't
supported on it.
