From the aforementioned metric, it was more successful than all prior
similar US military evacuation operations in history. Plus it was a
significantly more successful operation than the Britain's evacuation
from Kabul in 1842:

"Out of more than 16,000 people from the column commanded by
Elphinstone, only one European (Assistant Surgeon William Brydon) and a
few Indian sepoys reached Jalalabad."

Nope.

The military base was abandoned because Trump had ordered the DoD to
reduce troop strength to 2000, which made it operationally indefensible
before Jan 2021. We didn't get attacked/overrun there because the
Taliban was content to wait out until the 1 May 2021 deadline of the
Doha Agreement.

After Jan 2021, an actual departure plan was quickly generated, and
parts of that had the DoD tactically shrinking their defensible
perimeter by retreating from two air bases. This left just their
presence at Kabul International.

And FYI, before you try to stupidly suggest that DoD shouldn't have
picked Kabul but kept Bagram airbase, tell us just how you're going to
provide 24/7 security for 77 square kilometers (~19K acres): even if one
pushes it to only 3 shifts/day, that's a troop density of just one (1)
person per 27 acres. In contrast, Kabul International's just 8.5km^2.

Does Linux allow alerts if SMB remote disks are modified?

No, they are the weenerbrane that keeps posting to alt.fan.rush-limbaugh,
losing accounts, and nymshifting. Previously: "CLV" and "Chips Loral".

Not that I'm aware of, but you can configure Samba to audit
accesses. Have a visit with ChatGPT, it seems to know the
config commands:

[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
log level = 2
vfs objects = full_audit

[YourShare]
path = /path/to/your/share
read only = no
vfs objects = full_audit
full_audit:prefix = %u|%I|%m|%S
full_audit:success = mkdir rmdir read write pwrite
full_audit:failure = none
full_audit:facility = local7
full_audit:priority = NOTICE

I'd check the man page though, sometimes ChatGPT fibs.

I also found this:

https://linux.die.net/man/8/vfs_full_audit

Then start a process to scan the syslog?

I worked on an application that updated on file changes using
inotify, but that only caught changes through the kernel, not
remotely. At the time our solution was to periodically stat remote
file for mtime changes.

Exactly.

https://linux.die.net/man/1/swatch

You could use inotify on the server -- that way you're not slowing
down Samba with audit logging.

Back in the days of yore -- say, 1996 or so -- we needed to speed
up RADIUS lookups with the server. Did it with a library that
acted like getpwnam/getspnam, but held /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
in memory. As it did its lookups, it checked the time -- and,
every 5 seconds, it would stat the passwd and shadow files for changes.
If either changed, it reloaded the database.

This was in the days before nsswitch and hash file lookups. Ancient
Linux. radiusd would fork for each request, but Linux always
had COW for new process memory. I don't think we could have used
a forking server with this scheme on SunOS, since it would have to
copy the entire in-memory db for each fork.
