Hey distro lackeys! (There's nothing else beside lackeys on this NG.)

Whatcha doin' with your GNU/Linux machines? (Other than binging
on Netflix and being data raped by Amazon?)

On my inimitable LFS/Gentoo hybrid, I am currently, as we speak, making
another backup of my precious files to a brand-spanking-new 4TB USB drive.

These files are also backed up on 25GB BluRay optical disks, only possible on
GNUI/Linux, but the more fucking backups the better.

Shoot! I have tens of thousands of books and maybe even more music
titles and these critical babies have to be preserved.

What has been my investment in this mother lode?

On Linux, you configure your system with dotfiles. So, it's easy to
manage them. On Windows, you need a mouse to configure your system. So
it's more difficult to manage. For example, at work, each time I had a
new computer, I had to find out the way to display the extensions the
fucking retard Microsoft designers decide they are better hidden. And
other defaults I didn't like. With Linux, it's really easy to manage
more than just that.

And, by the way, his message is more related to linux advocacy than the
other garbage about religion and politic in the other threads.

Text editors on GNU/Linux that use the GTK+ toolkit will not display
"hidden files" by default. I suppose that "hidden files" are dotfiles
but there could be other types of which I am unaware.

I believe that Qt/KDE is the same.

This is a design decision of the developers to make the GNU/Linux
desktop more like Microslop.

Furthermore, that bastard-asshole Lennart Poettering and his systemd
cohorts want to centralize all GNU/Linux config files:

It's stupid because when it's hidden, it's more difficult to manage. For
example "toto.tar.gz" will be displayed "toto.tar". There are lot of
other examples with files with a wrong extension or with files with
unknown extensions which become very difficult to change to help the
system.

It's not related with Qt/KDE/GTK+/whatever, ls does the same by default.
It's the purpose of the dotfiles: to be hidden by default. But hiding
some files is not the same as displaying a different name for the same
files.

No. It was like that before Windows. It's a side effect of a good
reason. In every directory, you have two files: "." which is the actual
directory and ".." which is the parent directory. So the purpose was to
avoid displaying those names each time someone does a "ls" because they
provide no information, so they are just noise. Instead of testing "."
then "..", they realize that one test for the "." a first character
accomplished the same result. So it was easier to write and they used
it. Then people started to write a dot in front of the names of their
files to hide them when not needed. So they needed an easy way to
hide/display dotfiles depending on the need.

since half the applications I use dump it into $HOME, which is annoying.

Interesting, I also prefer this way because it's easy to keep the
hidden tag across file transfers and stuff.

I'm not saying it's a good reason, just that it is a possible reason.
Also, I don't think most users have to deal with a .tar.gz file.

The location of the config file(s) should be, and with a
lot of programs is, user specified either during build time
or run time. Usually there is a search hierarchy: current
dir, home dir, /etc.

So-called "modern" desktops, however, assume that the user
is lazy and does not/can not configure and therefore create
a standard, universal directory that can't be changed.
This is a bad practice.
