ALL the Linux "equivalents" are pure junk compared to this masterful
Windows application.

It's proprietary but free of cost for personal use.

Along with other apps, the creator has worked on it since 1999. ONE
competent, dedicated Windows developer puts to shame the entire universe
of FOSS crapware developers that have tried to do what this guy does.

Linux has a command (with the same name) that outputs TONS of info, but
it's basically unreadable. The output is made for... I don't know who
the intended audience is, but it's not regular users.

This app is yet more PROOF that in a world where Windows exists, there's
no reason to run Linux on your desktop.

And he missed the part where, even if you subscribe, nothing quits
working after your subscription expires.

As far as I know, there are VERY VERY FEW (maybe 0) devilish
rentware-only programs out there that literally lock you out of your
documents when the software subscription expires. Adobe doesn't. MS
doesnt.

MS Office seems to be heading to subscription only, though. But for now
you can still buy one-time purchase versions through MS (the latest is
Office 2021). But even if the Office 365 apps expire, you can use your
own docs.

I just saw MS Office 365 can be really inexpensive. $99 per year for 6
users on the family plan. $1000 over 10 years / 6 users = $166 each.
Very good deal, even if inflation drives the price up to $200 ea, that's
$20 per year per user.

If they don't make another stand-alone version after Office 2021, I'll
just quit buying the licenses. LibreOffice will manage quite well in the
worst case scenario.

I bought Office 2021 Pro Plus for $40 USD if I remember correctly. They
have such specials on BleepingComputer all the time if someone is
looking for an Office or Windows license.

Face it, DFS confuses a nice, if overly-busy GUI, with actual base
functionality.

That is, if his GUI doesn't show it, he'll never know it.

Whereas hwinfo output can be run through a filter.

Also, it looks like hwinfo reads the files in /proc.

The 2020's, where I can use vim, gnu autotools, meson, gcc/g++, clang/clang++,
slrn, mutt, mpd + ncmpcpp, alsamixer, git, latex, ssh, and more in a terminal
window.

I do use gvim when I want edit two or more source-code files side by side.
Use zathura to read PDFs. GIMP for photo-tweaking. Libreoffice for short
how-tos. Conky for system info. GUI browsers mostly. And of course the sddm
display manager and the fluxbox window manager.

I'm not mocking him for enjoying a GUI, I'm mocking him for crowing like
a fool about it, as if there's only one true way to us a computer.

Hey same! Besides I use mpv instead of mpd and no alsamixer or latex.
Also I don't really like conky and use xosview2 instead.

I have to admit that there are certain things that are a lot easier to
do in the command line. I've very much appreciated the "libreoffice
--headless convert-to ODT *.docx" line.

I'm using slrn to respond to this post. It's efficient and quick. What does
DuFuS "think" I'm supposedly losing by using this CLI app instead of a GUI
application?

Sometimes I need to convert .pngs into .mp3s — so I just type...

convert filename.png filename.mp3.

As imperfect as the system itself can be, there is no denying that the
tools available in the free software world are more than enough to get
the job done. They will never satisfy DFS, but that's fine; I doubt the
developers of open-source are interested in having him as a client anyway.

I think the most common complaint of people using Linux CLI or GUI tools
is that they look dated. I'm not sure why this is such a problem,
especially if they still manage to get the job done, for free, in the
same amount of time.

Dated? Old ones, yeah. Gvim, yeah. GIMP? Naw, it seems pretty clean and
"modern" to me.

And hell, a lot of stock Windows apps look incredibly dated.

And the new styles (flat, no embossing on buttons) can make a GUI more
difficult to discern (and hence use).

Oh well, a lotta people are impressed by bling, and maybe think it
reflects on the functionality. People are funny.
