I don't think there was anything in his pretty gui that couldn't
be sussed-out through the Linux command line -- either by examining
/proc or /sys; or running tools like dmidecode, cpuid, lscpu, or lsmem
(to name a few).

Hours if not days of combing thru command-line output to assemble what
HWiNFO for Windows shows in 2 seconds, in a perfect and easily navigated
layout.

Have you checked out the 6,646-line hobbyware mess that 'hwinfo' gives you?

* the CPU info is printed twice (in v21.72 anyway), lines 128 and 1169.

* the tty devices in udevinfo are listed like so:

tty49
tty5
tty50

* not one mention of motherboards? wtf?

* it says I have a 3.5" floppy installed

That's what happens when 18 contributors aren't reined in, and the hobby
project has no defined goals. And it long ago should've been made into
an ncurses or gtk app with a minimal GUI.

The entire GuhNoo/Linux bizarro world can't compete with the one
Slovakian commercial developer that created HWiNFO for Windows.

You're still confused.

CPU-X (Linux) is an inferior clone of CPU-Z (Windows).

HWiNFO (Windows only) is far superior to both, and to EVERY Linux app of
its kind that I've seen.

I don't know why Bloaty even brought up CPU-X; it's not in the same
league as HWiNFO.

Hours if not days? Exaggerate much?

You should try dmidecode -- I think it's been ported to Windows. Handy
for things like discovering what memory is installed in a machine,
including brand name, part number, and serial number.

How much would the Windows license be for something like "perf", which
comes with the Linux kernel?

Say...when _are_ you going to try building Linux from vanilla
source? (You won't be able to build Windows from sources, of course,
because you don't *have* the sources...doesn't that *bother* you?)

You should try it at least once. Even if it won't boot, you can't
deny you'll learn something.

Or even, just download the source and poke around -- it is well laid-out.
You might even read the documentation for the mount options for the new
ntfs3 driver. Could come in handy if you ever need to get at an NTFS
volume without Windoze getting in the way.

The problem is probably with his virtual server implementation.

I assume he's using HyperV, as that's what WSL2 uses. That is
a Microsoft product.

I used HyperV in a CASP (CompTIA Advanced Security Practioner) class;
the instructor had us running Kali Linux in it.

At work, there was talk about the Corp mandating HyperV, so I used it for
awhile. I hurried back to VirtualBox. I'm sure it's fine for certain use
cases.

That statement lets me know you haven't taken even a casual glance at
HWiNFO.

I seriously doubt you can use any or all Linux tools to duplicate the
info provided by HWiNFO (Windows).

Being FOSS is a bonus. It's better. It allows branching and
modifications that trickle down to end users.

It may be that most end users don't care if software is FOSS, but we
can't forget that, were it not for the FOSS model, a lot of software
would not even exist!

Agreed. I appreciated, for instance, that Thunderbird's FOSS nature
allowed for someone else to pick up the project and offer us an
alternative which doesn't require us to support Mozilla in any way.
However, most people aren't even aware of what open-source even is.

I'd say every single thing, but it's not fair to compare them. CPU-X
'competes' with CPU-Z. Neither are on the level of HWiNfo.

CPU-X/CPU-Z reports the basics on CPU, cache, mobo, overall system,
graphics card, and a benchmark or two. It's plenty of system info for
an avg user.

But HWiNFO is a serious hardware info app, with extreme detail about
every component, including the BIOS. Besides having a decent GUI, it
offers lots of user settings and it outputs a well-formatted text report
that's 3500 lines including spaces and comments:

There's a similar Windows app called AIDA Extreme, but it's not free for
personal use.

Linux can't compete.
