Help the poor; my pants are tore!

Also, my Xpdf is not rendering text for some PDF files.

An example PDF file is posted to here:

alt.binaries.multimedia.transformation

Opening this file with either qpdfview or mupdf will
render the images and text. Opening with xpdf will only
render the images and not any text.

What is going on? How can I correct this?

Note that xpdf renders text on most other PDF files,
but this file, and many others, there is no text rendered.

I suspect that I may be missing fonts. But which ones?
And why does qpdfview and mupdf render the fonts when they
have access to the same system fonts?

Give this poor little boy some answers.

Dobbs rewrites this, it is invalid precedent. States are
liable for denying needed abortions, e.g. TX.

Beats me. I don't use xpdf anymore (though I just installed it an it looks
cool). I use zathura. Both have a hella dependencies, according to ldd.

The only dependencies I despised are KDE. When you want to install a
small KDE application, you need to install all KDE with it and it's a
fucking no way with me. But, zathura:
- starts really fast,
- is manageable with a keyboard,
- displays every pdf needed.

Using pdffonts I get this:

Note that these files are NOT embedded, and that means the

Checking my .xpdfrc file I see this:

fontFile Times-Roman /usr/share/fonts/urw-fonts/n021003l.pfb

The "Times-Roman" is mapped to "n021003l.pfb" which is not
in the usr/share/fonts/urw-fonts directory. The same is
true for the other fonts listed.

Could this be the reason?

If so, then how do qpdfview and mupdf find the appropriate
fonts?

I should examine other PDF files that don't render fonts
with xpdf but it would take me half the fucking day --
and I have other fish to fry.

Once again, you screw your system without understanding it. Every decent
pdf renderer should be able to rely on a default available font. If xpdf
can't do this simple thing, either you broke it (which is plausible) or
it's garbage.

Zathura is just another cheap graphical front end to poppler
and xpdf:

"For instance we provide a plugin for PDF documents using either
the poppler [which is based on xpdf] or the mupdf library."

The same for Djvu and other formats.

Xpdf required the original 35 urw-fonts PostScript fonts.

Recently, these fonts were superseded by a new font set:

https://github.com/ArtifexSoftware/urw-base35-fonts

However, xpdf still retains in the xpdfrc config file
the mapping to the original font set.

There are two possible solutions:

1) remap to the newer fonts, which may not work
because the types are different.

2) install the original fonts. which are available
here:

I need to try both of these, but it's going to be

I was not sure about the mapping from the old URW Postscript
fonts to the new URW fonts. I had to check other distros for
examples.

RedHat-based distros still use the old URW fonts, but Arch Linux
uses the new fonts. Using their xpdfrc config file as an example
I was able to get the correct mapping:

Note these are all OTF fonts and not the older Type 1 mappings.

Xpdf is the BEST simple PDF reader on GNU/Linux. Why use anything else?
