Ordinarily, I don't give a flying fuck about network programming
but necessity does dictate.

I need to read through an HTML file, find all external HTTP(S) links,
and then determine if those external links are still viable, i.e.
if the pages to which they link still exist.

Perl is the language of choice.

Finding the links is not a problem, but how do I determine viability?
Do I look for the "404" error or is there another way?

I don't want no fucking Python code.

Pseudocode or just the relevant commands would be preferable.

As expected, none of the duncified denizens on this NG are up
to the task.

Perl can do it:

https://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=801302

However, I don' want to install dozens of Perl modules just to get
this simple job done (that's bullshit web programming for ya').

Therefore, I break it into pieces.

First, I extract the links using "hrefgrep -p -s > links.txt."

Hrefgrep is Perl code. (http://home.linuxfocus.org/~guido/#webgrep)

Thank the gods for FOSS!

Then I process each link to see if it is viable.

(Unfinished)

Thanks for nothing, assholes.

Does it ever occur to you that no one WANTS to help you because YOU are such
an asshole?

Not mention that its only been 5 hours since your question. On a holiday.
Pretty sure people have better things to do today than help assholes like you.

He also couldn't be bothered to google for the answer,
probably because it didn't occur to him to do so.

(I didn't even need google to find an answer -- I used "man"
on a popular CLI tool.)

This isn't Linux advocacy, Mr. Too-lazy-to-use-google.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

I did search, but, as I indicated, and as you missed,
the Perl modules have dozens of dependencies that I
don't want to manage. (It's almost as bad as Python!)

So what is this tool?

You won't -- you can't -- reveal because it will ruin your
chance to play the "BIG MAN."

But we all know that the big man is just the little man
in disguise.

Eh, twinkletoes?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Game theory: in a game of iterated "Prisoner's Dilemmas",
the best strategy is tit-for-tat, unless you've identified
the opponent as a "scorpion".

It's usually a bad strategy to (try to) ridicule people
from whom you want help.

The tools for querying man pages are apropos(1), whatis(1), and man(1).

DYOH. Instead of handing you a fish, I'm teaching you to fish.

Why do you people even bother with him? The first thing I do after I set
up Betterbird is filter out all of his nyms.

With Pan, the default bozo bin setting for 'ignore author' is 1 month.
'until hell freezes over' is another click that I sometimes forget.

Well, if you're fine with bash, this should do it:

while IFS=" "; read -r url; do
curl -fs "$url" > /dev/null || echo "$url down"
done < "$1"

(or replace $1 with a path to the file)

user <candycane> is generated from /dev/urandom

But there _are_ ways of ignoring every one of his nyms in Pan. If the
program is incapable of letting you do that, just use Thunderbird and
save yourself the precious seconds it takes to read his idiocy.

As if you give a fuck about "precious seconds."

You are posting on this group almost 24 hours a day
each and every day -- and every post is numbingly banal
and trite.

I used Thunderbird for years, until the newsgroup feature became unstable.
I have not tried it recently.

Boredom?

Besides, if one is complacent about crazed extremists,
then they win. Better that moderates police the alleged
"advocates" that talk crazy talk.

The guy gives Linux advocacy a bad name.

Yes, it's impressive to discover he never heard about wget or curl. He
really knows nothing about Linux and it proves, once again, that his
claims about his own distro are only a lie (or a self deception).

To be fair, maybe they didn't think to look through the man page?

With a normal guy, I would be fair. But with someone pretending to be
the real and only master of Linux all others are retard and suck, there
is no need to be fair. When he shows he doesn't know the basic, there is
only need to have fun.

And I agree, he doesn't think. That's beyond his abilities.
