To most people, Windows is indeed free since it came with their machine.
It only costs something to people who are building a machine from scratch.

They've already done articles about this. I recall that when I worked
for a local retailer, the cost of Windows bundled with a machine you
purchased was $50. It seems to be around $30 per license now.

It's about the right price if you have no idea whether you will like it
and choose to install it.

You would be OK with that, right? That's fair treatment of you, right?

This is EXACTLY what Stallman wants to happen to "unethical" closed
source software:

* "We will give them the Free software so your non-Free software will
fail."

* "non-Free software is completely unethical and should not exist at
all"

That grotesque, evil slob would deny a career to untold numbers of
commercial software developers if he could. He would absolutely
decimate the software industry, all because he has some delusion that
everyone has the "right" to everyone's source code. The most brilliant
software developers in the world, most of whom write commercial code,
would quit doing it - or greatly curtail their efforts - if they
couldn't make a living from it.

Photoshop, et al.

He wants to update the Linux kernel because it can be optimized to run
better on certain hardware if you know which flags to set. Additionally,
the kernel tends to improve with each version rather than slow the
entire system down the way the Windows and MacOS ones do.

Copilot is an example of why I'd never go back to Windows, even on a
new machine, just always trying to think for the user, call me old
fashioned but I'm capable of using ChatGPT independently of the
fuckin' OS, if I even wanted it in the first place, which I don't.
Linux is virtually *altogether* advantageous, to me, almost nothing at
all is sacrificed to abstain from Windows.

Yep, it's part of why I struggle daily with the decision to continue
using Windows. I'm not even sarcastic about it. DFS mocks the way I go
to and from Linux, but a lot of that is caused by my conscience telling
me that I am sacrificing my privacy by continuing to use Microsoft products.

I understand the need for it, people have uses for the bloated apps
like Office and Photoshop, that's fine, I had fun trying out Photoshop
for example, but at the end of the day, it's not worth continually
paying for, GIMP is all I really need, I'm not a professional
photographer. Linux gives me a system that reflects my priorities.

Right. What does "non-commercial" mean? It's truly of zero worth, I
suppose why not. But by definition anything of value needs to be
protected.

Very few people (and essentially zero companies) want to develop
useful, quality code that some corporation can scoop-up and
incorporate into their product without reciprocity. Very few want to
be unpaid contributors to some corporation's product.

It's Stallman, and anyone who agrees with his "all software should be
Free" nonsense, who is whacked.

Even great men can be "whacked" in some ways. Take Elon Musk, for
example. IMO a great man, but what is it with the Mars nonsense? It
makes no fscking sense whatsoever. We have far greater needs for
those resources, right here on Earth. It's not as if we're debt-free
and looking from something to do with our extra money.

I have no beef with paying for software, it's just the way it's always
so bloated that bothers me, there will be shareware type apps that are
available for Windows, that are inexpensive and not bloatware, but the
major stuff like Office and Photoshop is just a drag.

Musk is a character, not a very bright guy but ambitious, which counts
for something.

Perhaps Esri contributes to the Python project. arcgis is on Pypi but it
is covered by the Esri Master License Agreement. The base is Python 3.9
with many GIS specific modules but it is useless without an Esri license.
