Out of boredom, I decided to try Linux Mint 21.3 on my wife's MSI Alpha
15. I didn't install it since it's not my machine, but I figured it was
worth trying out on this all-AMD machine.

As expected, Linux Mint immediately supports the GPU with open drivers
which run beautifully. The operating system immediately understood that
the panel is meant to display at 120hz and supported it. Wireless and
Bluetooth were flawless as was the keyboard illumination. Shockingly,
Linux understood not to charge the battery past 80% which was a setting
configured in Windows that I didn't expect would be respected without
the proper software in Linux. Score one for MSI doing this properly
unlike ASUS. The speakers on this unit are rather terrible, but they
sound much better in Linux indicating that the poor quality is more due
to bad third party software than hardware limitations. Either way,
they're not as good as my Zephyrus G14 or my previous MSI GT72. Finally,
the machine runs much faster while using less memory than Windows (3GB
rather than 6GB out of the box). This is despite the fact that the
operating system features the same kind of effects as one would expect
within Windows.

I can only imagine how great Linux will be if and when NVIDIA decides to
make its drivers completely open-source. Until then, anyone buying an
AMD computer is incredibly well served by Linux Mint.
