When you run a public-facing server, if you don't know you are always
under attack, you just have no clue of what's happenings and you should
look at the logs.

the degradation of the performances should be well balanced to avoid
having problems more important than the performance degradations
provided by the security.

I don't believe it. Your benchmarks are only in your head. I'm pretty
sure, your computer is slower (as you don't use it, it doesn't matter)
and some people are using it to mine bitcoins at your expense.
