I was prescient as fuck to switch to Linux, huh? Good lord! How can
they think this kind of technology is worth anything to me? It's the

Another "like, duh" moment from Microsoft. They probably didn't expect the
backlash they got. Why they didn't expect it is another "like, uh" moment.

Some "committee" got it wrong? And with all their "experts" who know
the "best way" to do things? Wow, I didn't think that would ever
happen! /s

I'm kind of shocked MS is actually moving forward and releasing such an
app.

What's it for? Law enforcement? Employee monitoring?

If it was a separate app that people had to pay for, download and install I
would be fine with it. Embedding it into Windows is an incredibly stupid idea.
This is already a PR disaster and it is only going to get worse.

What the fuck were they thinking?

I agree. To me it's a deranged idea: storing thousands and thousands of
screenshots that are near impossible to do meaningful searches against.
I don't know what all info it captures, but for the individual user it
would be more useful if each screen capture also stored some metadata,
such as which apps were running, how long they were running, file names
loaded, which app had focus, etc. Even then, it's mostly just "nice to
know" data.

But combine it with a keylogger and an employer has total insight into
everything an employee does. Maybe that's their target audience.

Or MS has some plan to use the screenshots with OCR software to do
something pointless.

If they make it uninstallable, people are gonna be pissed.

Agreed on all points.

I would not be surprised to see MS eventually abandon this whole idea.
Remember when Apple was going to scan everyone's photos for kiddie porn? A
noble idea to be sure, but an incredibly invasive thing to do. After a huge
backlash, Apple backed down.

Windows "Recall" is along the same lines. And the backlash against "Recall"
has only just begun.

That would have been a fiasco. I've been told otherwise normal parents
sometimes take photos of their offspring that could be construed as kiddie
port if you're into naked two year olds.

Yep. The classic "naked on a rug on the floor" photo would be seen as kiddie
porn. To this day I can't believe Apple thought that was a good idea.

And today, I also can't believe that (1) "Windows Recall" was originally going
to be enabled by default and (2) the data was originally not going to be
encrypted and (3) originally any user on the PC could access it and (4) MS
originally thought 1, 2 and 3 were OK.

That is, until the tech press started screaming about 1, 2 and 3.

Well, everyone is climbing on the AI bandwagon even though some of the AI
people themselves aren't sure it's a good idea, the companies are getting
sued for hoovering up all sorts of copyrighted and private information.

Then there's the little problem of LLMs being stochastic processes,
meaning there's a 50/50 chance the answer will be bullshit. My favorite is

Microsoft is certainly hyping it beyond all rationality. They (naturally) see
this as a way to increase sales/use of Windows. But it could actually have the
opposite effect. What if HP/Lenovo/Dell/etc. start to back away from the whole
"Copilot PC" branding?

I think this is exactly what the whole "AI" train needs. A huge dose of
Reality. People will continue to push back against this nightmare technology.
I would not be surprised to see Apple's 1984 Big Brother commercial make a
comeback.

This could not be any creepier. Microsoft actually wanting to record
everything you do. Combine that with their horrible track record of security
and you have this PR disaster.

I'm on your side, but I think that most people won't hold it against
M$, as long as it isn't turned on without their knowledge. A small
bump in the road, for M$.

I hope the abuses don't sour people on the whole technology. Used
correctly models can be used on edge devices like a phone. This is a step
forward. Now when you say the wake word like 'Hey Alexa', the rest of the
transaction is handled by the Amazon, Google, or whatever server. Doing
the complete process on the local device saves the internet traffic and
also keeps your data where it belongs.

Unfortunately, M$ is taking the opposite approach, using local AI to
potentially slurp up all your data. I'd taken several MIT courses on
machine learning and part of the lectures that was stressed frequently was
the ethical aspects.

There are a few YouTube videos about this. Basically, they demonstrate
that if a hacker were to exploit one of Windows's many 0-day problems,
they would have access not only to the computer in its current state but
to an encyclopedia of all of your activity. If I recall correctly, the
data is not encrypted as they suggest, but rather uses some very
accessible database file. It is a privacy and security nightmare in its
current form.

That's why they push Bitlocker for Pro/enterprise. I guess Home users get

As far as I know, Bitlocker encrypts on Home devices too, though you
have no control over it. I know that when my mom had a problem not too

Wouldn't put it past 'em. Didn't they try to make edge uninstallable and

My father-in-law sent me a photo of my boy running around naked in his
back yard because he had smothered his clothes with something. I was
quick to delete it for that very reason.
