1) click a file type with a default app and it opens in that app

2) install LibreOffice 24.8.4.2 for Windows (typical install)

3) click a file type (with a default app) that can also be opened by LO
and now I'm asked which app to open it with

And, all document types that LO handles that were not assigned a default
app were assigned to LO without my permission.

LibreOffice: just say no.

What did you expect it to do (in 3) if the operating system suddenly has
more than one application that can open a particular file? The operating
system has no idea why you installed the new one and is merely asking
you to confirm. I don't see how this is an issue.

As for LibreOffice setting itself to be the default for formats not
handled by any other application, I'm fairly sure that LibreOffice only
communicates that it can open them to the operating system, but doesn't
set them. I think the operating system itself is what decided that
LibreOffice should open those formats.

This is the strangest thing to be whining about.

All standard stuff. Are you new to Windows? Maybe you should have
chosen Custom Install.

You DO realize these are very easy to change back, right?

He does. But he just likes to bitch about Linux and other FOSS.

It's a very odd thing to complain about though. A ton of file types
couldn't be opened before and suddenly they are, so DFS is unhappy about
it. If there is an application he would prefer to use to open those
formats, he is free to install it and then change the defaults to that
application by going into those settings, finding the application and
allowing it to manage all supported formats. He's grasping at straws at
this point.

All good points.

Not to mention that he gave "permission" to do all of this when he did
the "typical install".

Sounds like a Windows Newbie.

He's just looking for problems. He hasn't had a stellar Linux experience
and I can sympathize with him in that respect. There _are_ tons of very
poorly constructed distributions which give the impression that the
operating system as a whole is bad. openSUSE was the first one I used
which was great on my previous laptop. Heck, it was the only one which
allowed that machine to wake from suspend. Fedora is the best I've used
on this machine. Unfortunately, a lot of us keep thinking that Ubuntu
will provide a stellar experience, similarly the ones based on it, and
the reality is that it is put together very poorly. The fact that it and
its derivatives freeze for no reason should be the main evidence of that.
