My power supply was delivered today. The vid card will
be at least 2 weeks until shipment.

But I couldn't fucking wait. I swapped a vid card from
another machine then switched on the power.

It's alive!

After some BIOS tweaking I booted with the Gentoo Live USB.
Right now I'm in that stupid KDE desktop. What junk!

I need to use Gentoo to get the CPU parameters, especially
the cache sizes, so that I can cross compile a complete
system from scratch.

There will be no generic distro on this mighty machine!

It's been ages since I installed Gentoo. It used to be my go-to distro
for many, many years. I even once installed it on an original RPI.
That was a bit of a pain, I must admit :-)

These days I'm just on Debian. I learned to accept the fact that not
all packages may be configured exactly as I want them.

Most desktop environments are junk and I like to stick with simple
window managers myself. My favorite's still awesome, which is, well,
awesome.

You should try FVWM3:

https://github.com/fvwmorg/fvwm3

I absolutely could not live without this WM. It is, and
always has been, the greatest.

Unfortunately, the future of FVWM3, as well as other
WMs, will be threatened if the GNU/Linux universe succumbs
to Wayland.

I will NEVER accept Wayland. I will either freeze or move
to FreeBSD.

This isn't yet a complete work. When you are _done_ with the machine the
way you want and begin using it for the first time for purposes other
than messing with the machine itself, that's when your Roman Empire
shows itself after about one or two minutes of use :)

Pass that point unharmed, and I can zero in better with what the issue
with my xeon computer is.
