'some errant distro'? You mean the 95% of distros that try to
accommodate everyone with easy OS installers and GUI system admin and
package managers?

And those user-friendly distros actually have succeeded in getting some
user share (maybe 4%) over the last 30+ years, and probably half of that
was gained over the last 5-8 years.

So user-friendly is the best thing that ever happened to Linux.

The worst thing is a tossup between:
1) your parents - they bore a boor
2) the male pansies and women that are running the Linux Foundation and
many distros, which are now chock full of codes of conduct and DEI
trash.

Emacs was originally written by Dr. Richard M. Stallman (who also
originally wrote gcc, glibc, and a LOT of other critical GNU software).

Dr. Stallman is one heck of a C programmer and also one of the great
humans of the 20th/21st centuries.

I have been wanting to learn Emacs but I don't have the time to explore
all of its possibilities. There are only 24 hours in a day and I have
plenty of other irons in the fire.

But the "all in one" philosophy of Emacs has inspired other software
such as Cooledit, which is a text editor plus email client plus debugger
plus a lot of other things.

Shoot! I could go on and on! The GNU/Linux/FOSS software ecosystem is
so rich that it makes Microslop/Apphole look like an old ladies' sewing
bee.

"Good?" What do you mean by good?

Emacs is a text editor. Any other text editor can do
a similar job.

The "good" comes with all the extra versatility that can
be had within the program if one would actually need and
desire that versatility.

I don't really need all that extra stuff but others may
need it or want it.

Maybe if took the time to learn Emacs I too would want
its capabilities.

But, for now, I'll stick to simpler text editors.
