Virtually every app - including FOSS - prompts you to make it the
default app to open certain file types.

I followed your link and a few more, including to the Windows developer
(not for MS) Rafael Rivera on X who made a bunch of claims without
providing proof:

Microsoft's responses to various questions seem a little evasive.

FAR more troublesome than this Bing Wallpaper app are the many, if not
most, websites which prompt you to subscribe, accept notifications,
accept cookies, save your password, etc. Over and over and over and
over. So sick of dismissing the intrusive requests.

And Google reads your cookies and/or Google searches and shows you
targeted advertising everywhere you go online.
