The venerable PNM (portable any map) image format that is unique to Unix
is still very much alive and kicking in spite of a plethora of "modern" formats
that have been introduced.

I use it ALL the time and therefore one knows that it MUST be damned good.

To process and manipulate PNM images there is the indispensable suite
of utilities and libraries called NetPBM:

https://netpbm.sourceforge.net/

Not only does NetPBM process PNM images but it also contains a host
of general imaging functions that the programmer can utilize such as color
space transforms, pixel transforms, etc.

Let us celebrate and give a hearty thanks to NetPBM and its long-time
maintainer.

GNU/Linux would be a little less superior without it.

What the fuck is this? No GNU/Linux "advocates" are responding
to yet another significant and brilliant post?

Fuck all the goddamned fucking distro lackeys that failed to
respond.

GNU/Linux is freedom as in "freedom" and not as is "beer."

Either adapt to this principle or else fuck yourself in your
selfish asshole.

Fucking lackeys couldn't even locate their fucking assholes.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Generally, you use images to show to other people, so I don't see how it
being Unix exclusive is a positive.

It’s a set of tools for processing images, not showing them.

A lot of GNU/Linux software will either default to or demand
PNM images for input/output.

One program that comes to mind is the SANE scanning package
where scanimage will output PNM format only.

The reason is PIPES.

All the programs within NetPBM can be piped together to provide
a processing chain. It is thus convenient to have software
output in PNM format so that it can be immediately piped
into a processing chain.

This is the traditional Unix way.

Oh, cool. I didn't know that.
