.... it turns out that using the NVIDIA services is indeed the wrong
thing to do. Stopping/disabling the three NVIDIA services and removing
/lib/systemd/system-sleep/nvidia did the trick.

I'm crossing fingers that it continues to work in the long run.

Disabling the
NVIDIA services and removing the /lib/systemd/system-sleep/nvidia file
is a solid fix for the suspend issue. However, for those who might not
be familiar, the problem often arises due to conflicts between the
NVIDIA driver and the system’s power management. These services
sometimes prevent the system from entering or waking up from suspend
mode properly.

A couple of additional points to consider:

Check Logs: Always a good idea to check the system logs (journalctl
-xe or /var/log/syslog) for any additional clues or errors related to
power management or GPU drivers.

Kernel Parameters: Some users might need to adjust kernel parameters.
Adding nvidia-drm.modeset=1 to the GRUB configuration can help in
certain cases.

Driver Versions: Ensure that your NVIDIA driver is up-to-date.
Sometimes, these issues are resolved in newer driver releases.

Hybrid Graphics: For laptops with hybrid graphics (NVIDIA + Intel),
additional configurations might be needed. Tools like prime-select or
nvidia-prime can help manage which GPU is in use.

Testing Configurations: Before making permanent changes, test
different configurations. Use a live boot environment if needed to
avoid locking yourself out.

Thanks for sharing your solution

I abandoned that idea and decided to simply remove the
nvidia-driver-550-open driver in favour of the nvidia-driver-535. That,
without any modifications, allows my unit to suspend and wake as it
should. It seems to be a bug in the NVIDIA driver and nothing else.

Being up-to-date is what caused the issue. :)

The issue is the gap between Linux being up to date and the nvidia
drivers being up to date. It's a long known issue and the reason for the
well know finger Linus did to nvidia. As nvidia is refusing to work with
Linux, there is no way the improvement in Linux can be included in the
nvidia drivers, so the Linux update brake the nvidia drivers and then
there is some time needed by nvidia to take care of the changes in Linux
to update its drivers.

That should have meant that the 550 driver would function better than
the 535 ones. Instead, the older ones work right. No matter, the problem
is solved and I am able to use Ubuntu and suspend together. The only
thing missing now is access to the movies I bought in Windows, but I
don't really care that much since they're still available to me through
the Xbox. I just have to hope that Microsoft wakes up and decides to
make these titles available on the web like everyone else does.
