Unlike the earlier VS academic/free editions that were noticeably crippled
the paid professional doesn't get you much over the community edition for
most purposes.

Because the future belongs to cross-platform development, and Visual
Studio is useless for that.

I have VS Community 2022 in a Windows 11 Arm VM on this MacBook Pro. For what
I need to do, it is fine. I'm not writing any commercial software, just
updating my own stuff from Intel code to Arm code. Which, BTW, could not be
easier.

But I did get my Windows 11 Arm/Windows Office 2021 AND Mac Office 2021 from
Bleeping Computer, about 6 months ago. All for around $120 total. Everything
installed and registered fine, and updates are fine.

You don't level up much until you get the enterprise edition and that's
not $45.

I'm using the community 2019 and 2022 versions and have not hit anything I
could not do with C# or C++. The subscription version of Pro does include
some Azure time but I've only worked with AWS.

Yeah, I was wrong, there isn't any reason for most people to pay for
it. I was sucked in by the low price.

It's really an entirely different animal. One nice feature of Visual
Studio is the available templates for various projects although they
aren't necessary. There is better support for WinForms and WPf, installer
creation, and so forth. You can get by with dotnet and MSBuild but it's a
lot more work.

That shows creating a project using dotnet on the command line. dwiw if
the dotnet SDK is installed on Linux it is the same procedure.

VSCode has a lot of extensions that I don't think are available in Visual
Studio workloads. For example I have Pylance installed for general Python
work, MicroPico for working with the Pico W, PlatformIO for Arduinos and
other boards, Jupyter notebook support, C/C#/C++ extensions, and a few
others.

That's on both my Windows and Linux machines. Visual Studio is Windows
only.

There is that. If the various websites can be believed VSCode has become
the IDE of choice for any language you care to mention. You have to be
careful since the landscape is changing rapidly.

There is the question of why it had to be built on Electron, instead of
using Microsoft’s own Dotnet framework--wasn’t that cross-platform enough?

different, incompatible IDE architectures.

There are some attempts in the works but you can't build GUIs on Linux
with .NET. Even MAUI omits Linux.

Based on your recommendation, I tried setting up VSCode
on my Linux box a few weeks ago.

After getting a handle on what was what, I ended up running
cpan to get some of its dependencies installed for perl development.
It ended up trying to install a package that wanted me to
downgrade my perl version. I didn't want to do that, so end
of that project.

I did try compiling and running a simple C program
in VSCode, which output something trivial to the console.
It wouldn't let me just run the thing ... insisted on
running it with gdb. I can see the utility of that,
but it wasn't what I expected.

Just add to that madness/fun, that’s actually a third fragment. Remember
the VS Code itself is not open source, the open-source version is called
“VS Codium”. And lots of addons for VS Code do not work with VS Codium.

Seems like it’s actually biting Dotnet on the bum. Microsoft clearly
prioritizes Linux support over Dotnet.
