Linux From Scratch (LFS) is still alive and kicking after a long, long, long
time.

I have learned so much from LFS and I am truly grateful. Without LFS
I would probably be just another distro lackey like all the assholes on COLA.

It's continued existence, however, strongly proves that not every user is content
with being a totally impotent distro lackey. People want to learn how to control
GNU/Linux and LFS gives them the knowledge.

LFS deserves the utmost respect and admiration from ALL GNU/Linux users.

All hail Linux From Scratch!

I've been building up GNU/Linux since before distro's existed so I have
no idea if LFS is good or not personally, but I've had conversations
with people who use it and it sounds like it's a very well built, and
educational option. I've read a little bit of it just to see what all it
had in the instructions and I like the fact that it teaches people what
each package is for, so you understand it's significance within the GNU
and Linux system which is wonderful. It does do things a little
differently then I do it but it's great and I'm glad generations after
me will be able to benefit from how we used to do it in the early 90's.
Although not everyone back then had access to a Minix machine at home
and unless you went to university you didn't have the ability at the
time do use GNU/Linux (Most people used university machines to build the
source of GNU/Linux). I hope whoever is behind LFS continues to do so
for the next few generations at least. And maybe those generations will
also take over the process when the LFS people are too old to continue it.

BTW, if you are interested in looking at Minix you can still download it
here: http://www.minix3.org/

Also interesting is the history of Minix here:

Apparently development of Minix has ceased.

In school I usually ended up knowing something after the teacher had
screamed it at me for the 100th time while I was staring out the window
or up her skirt. So maybe if mailing lists just put out a short but
USEFUL blurb each time like it's done with fortunes....

Although I don't plan to ever do a LFS, I download the book and starter
files every few years just in case I want some hassles in my life.

I tried the download tonight, but just doing that - which should be
simple - is a GuhNoo hobbyware fiasco.

LFS says there are 94 starter files:
https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/downloads/stable/wget-list

So I create a LFS/files directory and put the wget-list in there, plus
create a failure log text file to track if any downloads fail.

Then run wget compiled for Windows:
GNU Wget 1.21.4 built on mingw32.

command
$ wget -c -i wget-list.txt --rejected-log=fails.txt

It does its thing and downloads... 91 files. 3 are missing.

----------------------------------------------------
FINISHED --2024-10-12 22:33:48--
Total wall clock time: 1m 42s
Downloaded: 91 files, 513M in 1m 4s (8.02 MB/s)
----------------------------------------------------

Surely the failure log will have 3 entries I can download manually and
finish the task.

But no such luck. fails.txt is empty.

I guess the LFS devs expect their victims to parse the 94 file names out
of the wget-list, then visually or programmatically compare them to the
91 files that were actually downloaded.

Or know what to look for in the 1165 lines of wget output to find 3
failed downloads.

I think I get it, LFS: it's a test, to see if victims can handle
crapware problems from the get-go.

This! Is! Linux!

For an educational option, I agree: LFS is good. Now for a day to day
use, you do as you want, but I wont promote it. I don't want to check
every application day to check if an update is available. So the package
manager provided by my distribution is pretty good for that.

My sentiments exactly, I have been following LFS for many years now.

So I ran wget with the --no-verbose option, and in the much more sparse
output spotted exactly 3 'Unable to establish SSL connection.' messages
scroll by.

It didn't list the filenames it was trying to get, so I had to find them
in the wget-list by looking at the previous and next filenames.

The missing files were:

https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/autoconf/autoconf-2.72.tar.xz
https://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/expect/expect5.45.4.tar.gz
https://sourceforge.net/projects/psmisc/files/psmisc/psmisc-23.7.tar.xz

1 from gnu.org and 2 from sourceforge.

The failure log file was again empty. In the minds of wget developers,
'Unable to establish SSL connection.' doesn't count as rejected.

Anyway, I downloaded the 3 files manually with no problems. Task complete!

Instead of this fiasco, the LFS devs should've created a small tarball
with all 94 required files in it, and nobody would be subjected to such
shenanigans.

The moral is don't give up, and don't let the hobbyists beat you.

LOL!

I was madly in love with my 4th grade teacher Ms. Mansour.

Wesley Chapel Elementary School, Decatur GA, 1972

She's about 75 now I would guess (the avg age of a *nix user).

YES totally agree, I always give students and other people I mentor
the assigment to learn linux with LFS, because all this distro hopping is for people
that really are ok linux users, but not linux engineers or linux hackers,
if you know Linux at a low level you just get a distro that DOES NOT GET
IN YOUR FACE like gentoo/arch and then build from there, your kernel,
with your drivers, with your <add here whatever> there is no need for
distro hopping, that is just hopping from a group of programs and
configurations that some people choose for you to another.

Happy Hacking

I built multiple LFS boxes back in 2000 or so. I wouldn't want to use it
for anything other than a learning project, but it was a **great**
experience. I learned quite a lot about building software and how Linux
is put together. It was especially fun when I tried cross-compiling the
kernel on a Pentium II for Pentium I target and kept getting segfaults
because I didn't set -march properly :).

Why do they call a fast a fast, when it goes so slow?

There is ALFS, or Automated Linux From Scratch, which, although
I have never used it, is supposed to work well in building an
LFS system.

But only a step or two up from LFS is Gentoo. ALFS does not
permit individual package configuration but Gentoo certainly
does -- and much more.

I suggested to the ALFS team to consider using using Gentoo
Portage as its automated build but received no response.

Gentoo was my next step after LFS. I may go back to it for my daily
driver as my current Fedora box is highly customized. I just always
hated trying to get multimedia and printing to work.
