I get it for building a server farm or mainframe LPARS
running Linux and these are good areas for Linux but why
the fuck would anyone punish themselves by using Linux as
a desktop system?

No telemetry, lighter code, a feeling of complete control. However, most
Linux distributions use Firefox and Thunderbird by default and these are
known to collect data by default, so the telemetry argument is out the
window unless you get rid of those two.

Hi, Tori, nice to meet you. I agree with you, when you have an i9
with 64 GB RAM and NVMe storage, go with Win11 but definitely disable
Copilot. But for a more modest box, even one that technically can run
Winblows, like mine, it sucks compared to Linux. Linux is sleek.

Yeah, because Mac OS and Windows are so much better about "not" collecting
personal information.

As for "getting rid of Firefox and Thunderbird," you can do that. Or you
could just go to the Security settings and turn telemetry off.

Problem solved either way.

I never said that they were. What I'm saying is that if you're using
Linux because you're concerned about telemetry, then you're being
hypocritical.

I don't have Thunderbird on the Fedora box but on Ubuntu telemetry is
disabled in the build and the checkbox is grayed out. The crash report
checkbox is unchecked.

"Allow Thunderbird to send technical and interaction data to Mozilla
Data reporting is disabled for this build configuration

Allow Thunderbird to send backlogged crash reports on your behalf"

I believe that is because the Firefox in Ubuntu is maintained by Ubuntu
itself rather than Mozilla.

Not really. The telemetry on Windows and MacOS is a LOT more pervasive and
almost impossible to completely remove. And Windows (the control freaks who
program it) decide what you should do with your computer if you're using
their crap. My daughter and her husband have just run into Windows' "fun and
games" when their Microsoft Windows computer "helpfully" automatically
updated their computer from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Now, apparently, they
have several issues — one, apparently, with the network card driver.

That could be true but, "supposedly," telemetry is just there for quality
control. But I tend to be skeptical also. I go through Firefox and
Thunderbird and get rid of things like automatically saving credit card
numbers, etc. I turn off allowing notifications and requests to use my
camera or audio, for whatever may "need" audio or the camera... like
"Virtual Reality." Virtual reality? Really? What is the hell is that all
about? Personally I look at it this way. I'll decide what and when I want
turned on, on a case by case basis when I need it. I've NEVER like
applications that try to think for me and make decisions for me. (It's one
of the main reasons why I hated Microsoft Office.)

I think it is on Linux Mint also. I don't believe I've ever had to uncheck
it in Thunderbird.

I don't have that issue so I can't comment on it. However, I can't
recall a single Windows in the past which didn't suddenly lose
recognition of hardware which worked fine on the previous version. I
used to force Windows 7 to run the Vista driver for my scanner because
the new version didn't see a point of supporting a scanner from 2003.

Meanwhile, many of us don't have a choice but to support Microsoft
Office because everyone else doesn't mind the fact that the suite makes
decisions for them. Even if LibreOffice isn't the solution, OpenDocument
is. That should be the default, not Microsoft's format.

If I'm not mistaken, the Thunderbird used in Mint is no different than
the one in Ubuntu, a .deb that is entirely maintained by Ubuntu itself
rather than Mozilla.
