So after all the issues I have related with Arch Linux on a FikWot SSD...

I installed memtest86+-efi on Arch and ran it, and it passed. I couldn't
fsck the FikWot due to ERROR: FEATURE_C12 or somesuch not supported.
The final straw was that Arch wouldn't boot... journalctl showed that
the "plymouth" binary couldn't be found.

So I took the FikWot out and put it in a USB case. I put the Ubuntu SSD back
in and most of the issues disappeared. The only remaining issue was the
slowness of copying between USB and the SSD. YouTube worked fine, no
weird errors that would occur now and then.

I checked the FikWot with smartctl. It came up clean, but the output
noted it was not found in the smartctl database. I googled again and
found some people saying that FikWot worked fine, and others saying it
caused immediate issues. Apparently it uses some newer technology.

I am left wondering if the problems were due to Arch, the SSD, or the
laptop. It's old, and the power LED is flashing. I've already replaced the
battery before and won't do it again.

As a backup, and perhaps my main desktop machine later, I ordered a mini PC
with a N100 CPU from "Trycoo". It comes with Win 11 Pro. My plan is to
shrink that partition and install Debian Testing from a Live USB that I've
already made and tested. It uses the Calamares installer framework, simpler
than the usual Debian installer.

I am keeping Windows so that I can test my projects on it as well. I could
use a virtual machine, but the goddam Win 11 costs almost as much as the
mini PC.

We shall see how that all works out.

The Beelink I bought came with Windows 11 Pro which seemed odd for the
price. I did bring it up and it did seem to work but I didn't dig into the
license before overwriting it with Ubuntu.

Is that you, flatfish+++? Or did "Hadron" take over your account? :-D

For the benefit of others, I used the nym "linonut" for awhile years ago, and
the said change above came from some sillyassed trolls.

Once a sillyass, always a sillyass.

Microsoft offers "incentives" to ensure that most PCs ship with their
carpware.

Powered up the mini PC awhile ago and it is still going through updates to
Win 11 Pro. The usual slowass Microsoft crap.

The incentive being that customers will actually buy the product rather
than ignore it entirely.

Dude, even when you weren't retired, you didn't have a life. Just shut
the fuck up and take it. You have nothing better to do than stare at a
screen for however long it takes. If it makes you feel better, you can
kill two birds with one stone and tell those burly black dudes to rape
your ass _while_ you wait for the updates to complete.

I've got a company laptop that I use solely for the SonicWall VPN. IT was
getting antsy since it was still Windows 10. I fired off the update
Thursday and went geocaching so I don't know when it finished downloading
what appears to have been 7 GB. I rebooted and went through the 'you
computer may reboot several times' hoops, followed by logging in to the
'Hi. We will be getting things ready for you for the next half hour'
screen.

Finally! I fired up SonicWall and went through its hoops including two
trips to the frigging 'Windows Authenticator' app on my phone and I could
finally ping my work machine.

I did not fall for the 'Install this preview to brick your machine'
gambit.

Listen to this Blowman asshole. He jumps in on anything and
everything just to show that he's done everything and anything.

One can mention a place or a thing at random and Blowman will
immediately jump in.

Example: Pago Pago.

Blowman: I was on a tramp freighter and we held over in Pago Pago
for engine repairs. I remember the lack of nightlife and the
hostility of the natives ...

Example: Eniac

Blowman: I worked for a company that had a mothballed Eniac in the
sub-basement. During lunch hour we'd sometimes go down and program
with the plugboard ...

Give it rest, asshole.

Blowman is just a do-nothing, know-nothing pompous imbecile.
