I would think Israel bought a bunch, modified them, and sold them thru a
front company.

To get them into only or mostly Hezbollah's hands, they must've had a
source inside Hezbollah.

Unless there was an inside man, Israel must've done some software
hacking to know which phone numbers to send the remote detonation code to.

It was a well-executed operation, and delivered devastating results for
very little cost.

Supposedly, Hezbollah made a single purchase order for 5K units.

The pagers were originally from a company in Taiwan, but for whatever
reason, the order went through a European company. Speculation is that
it was this third party middleman where the change was made, and then
after delivery, Hezbollah did the "last mile" to their own units.

It wasn't necessarily a betrayal, as it could have merely been a gap
(due to incompetence/lack of awareness/etc) in secure operations.

Initial speculation was of hack, perhaps a Stuxnet-style like was done
to Iran's nuclear centrifuges to make the internal battery overheat.
Not likely, as thermal runaways aren't necessarily reliable enough for a
high rate of nearly perfectly timed high order kabooms.

FWIW, I did see an Open Lit source which mentioned PETN (Pentaerythritol
tetranitrate), but if that's correct, its a secondary explosive, so a
primary is needed for ignition. If I was designing it, I'd probably
look to use {redacted} as the primary, as its cheap & easy to get, and
is very small & can be initiated from a (pager) battery. For command
initiation, I have some thoughts, but these merit a "{redacted}" too.

Yup. Their propaganda machine is now ramping up on the 2 kids killed (&
3K terrorist casualties), but since Hezbollah killed 2 infants + 12 kids
under the age of 10 from just their Oct 7th attack, they should stick to
the collateral civilian casualties from Israeli aerial bombs.

In any event, none of these would be suited for a pager…way too big to hide

It’s a huge international shift in risks at many levels. Remember how we
had TSA inspections on laptops/etc? Miniaturization into a beeper changes

No, not necessarily steep, as the regulations are addressing the injury
risk from a fall: there's guidelines even for working on flat roofs.
In fact, one of my experiences with a violation was for a flat roof
built inside of a high bay that had one side that wasn't protected.
