i have tried running xubuntu and mint, but i get errors when
logging in or apps dont work.

i want a simple xfce system.

Have you thought that maybe the problem is with VirtualBox?

Probably not virtualbox; more likely installer error. Some virtualbox-specific
driver/module might need to be installed.

I'm currently wresting with an Arch install on that old old ASUS that was
running Ubuntu. UEFI vs BIOS and the damn CSM settings on an old BIOS....
Grub shows only the UEFI BIOS settings entry.

Looking at the Ubuntu install (on the previous SSD), it's not using UEFI.
Crappy American Megatrends BIOS?

In the meantime, working with Arch on this Lenovo; the install here was
straightforward. Go figure.
