From Tricia to Wilma in 5 steps

I updated a laptop today/tonight from Linux Mint 19.3 Mate (Tricia) to LM 22
Mate (Wilma) without backing anything up and without losing any data. This
required five steps and jumping over nine releases. From Tricia to Ulyana,
from Ulynna to Una (bypassing Ulyssa and Uma), from Una to Vanessa, from
Vanessa to Virginia (bypassing Vera and Victoria), and from Virginia to
Wilma.

And the laptop I did this on was a 2007 model Dell Latitude D430, running a
U7700 Core 2 Duo CPU, topped out at 2 GBs of RAM. (Try that on Windows.)

The five steps... from 19.3 to 20 via MintUpgrade. From 20 to 20.3 standard
upgrade. From 20.3 to 21 via MintUpgrade. From 21 to 21.3 standard upgrade.
From 21.3 to 22 via MintUpgrade. The Mint Upgrades take awhile (probably
about an hour and a half each.

Yes, I could have easily backed up the data I needed and did a new install
in the fraction of the time required for this process, but I was curious how
well it would work. I was impressed.

The other thing that impressed me is that, with each upgrade, the old
computer got faster, not slower. (Try that on Windows.) The D430 is no speed
demon, but you can get around on the Internet, with a little patience, and
you can actually watch YouTube videos, with lower resolution. Not bad for an
underpowered, 17 year old laptop.

So, if someone asks if MintUpgrade works, tell them "yes."

I upgraded my main desktop from Fedora 17 over the years to Fedora 38 or
so, often skipping every second release, but just doing the updates
every year or so. Rarely had an issue. The best thing is, like you
have noted, that my computer didn't slow down with each upgrade. I
always am a little concerned that the new system will be heavier, but
that hasn't been the case at all.

I've had an old laptop I upgraded Debian twice on.

It's taken me a long time to believe that a newer upgrade can actually be
faster than the old version. The complete opposite of Windows.

Microsoft Windows 6.1.7601

It don't work on Windows!

(Full disclosure: that's actually wineconsole.)
