'This morning four people were shot on the “Blue Line” Chicago subway
near Forest Park. All four are confirmed dead.

Forest Park is a Chicago suburb in Cook County 10 miles west of the
city.

Police are not releasing the name of the suspect. They have said a 911
call was received prior to 5:30AM and responding officers found four
victims. Three had died at the scene and one died later at the hospital
while being treated.

The suspect fled and was later apprehended. The accused suspect was
found on another train line, the Pink Line, with a firearm.

Guns are not allowed to be brought onto any property owned by the
Chicago Transit Authority. Transit areas are a “gun free zone” in
Illinois.

Just four days ago, the Chicago Transit Authority was bragging about its
extensive use of security cameras and anti-gun technology to ‘spot’ and
‘detect’ guns.

Chicago is one of the most gun-hostile jurisdictions in America.
Generally speaking, Chicago tries to ban all possession of handguns.

Illinois state law specifically prohibits gun possession on any property
owned by a public transportation agency.

Anti-Gun groups like the Everytown/Brady Center group rank Illinois as
#3 in the nation for “gun law strength” meaning how hostile it is to gun
ownership.

The anti-gun group the Giffords Law Center gives the State of Illinois
an “A-” for the degree to which they restrict gun ownership and
possession. The Giffords Center is named for former Congresswoman
Gabrielle Giffords who was shot in the head by former Quiznos employee
Jared Loughner in Tucson in 2011.

Police say that this shooting at Forest Park is an isolated incident,
even though Chicago has gone through a remarkable rise in violent crime.

Violent crime was reported in Chicago to be at the highest level in a
decade, even though the arrest rate dropped.

This is alleged to be part of the lax-on-crime policies of most major
left-wing elites in power, specifically prosecutors and judges who
release violent criminals with no required bail.

Illinois eliminated all bail as a condition of release in any criminal
case. Meaning that, if someone is charged with a quadruple murder, they
can be released while they wait for trial to begin.

In Illinois, as of September 18, 2023, defendants are not required to
post bail to secure their release. Meaning that, there is no guarantee
that they will show up to future court dates once accused of a crime.
The left pitched this as the “Pretrial Fairness Act” when it was
marketing the policy, such as this policy paper by the John
Podesta-linked Center for American Progress.

Left-wing groups have changed Illinois law to allow a judge to release
someone with serious charges before a trial if they are deemed to not
constitute a current risk to the public.

The only recourse for judges when a defendant fails to appear is to
issue a “failure to appear” warrant. Left wing groups claim that since
Illinois judges haven’t been issuing those warrants, defendants must be
showing up to court. There is no structural penalty for a failure to
appear warrant, other than being arrested and brought to court again.
Previously, the penalty was forfeiting the face value of the bond, which
created a strong financial incentive for bail bondsmen to produce
defendants before their scheduled court dates, and also for defendants
to appear or risk losing a significant sum of money.

Incidents like this also bring to light the degree to which gun bans
create a disarmed population which can be victimized by a single bad
actor.

States with the most gun violence share one trait

People can debate the need for more or fewer armed guards at American
schools, the use of active shooter drills and the wisdom of the idea that
maybe even teachers should be packing heat.

But there�s one thing that is indisputable in the available data on gun
violence � and the data is limited since until recently the federal
government was effectively barred from gathering it.

The indisputable fact is that where there are more guns, there are more
gun deaths.

This is true despite Texas Gov. Greg Abbott�s attempt to explain away gun
deaths at the elementary school in his state this weekby comparing them
to gun violence in Chicago.

�I hate to say this, but there are more people who were shot every
weekend in Chicago than there are in schools in Texas,� Abbott said on
Wednesday, arguing stricter gun laws are not a solution.

There are indeed a horrific number of gun deaths in Chicago each year.
CNN has covered the problem.

Butthere are more gun deaths in Texas, by far, than in any other state,
according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Texas suffered 4,164 gun deaths in 2020, the most recent year for which
the CDC has published data.

That�s a rate of 14.2 deaths per 100,000 Texans.

California, by comparison, saw 3,449 deaths, a gun death rate of 8.5.

Texas does not have the highest gun death rate, however. Far from it.

The top states by gun death rates are:

Mississippi � 28.6.
Louisiana � 26.3.
Wyoming � 25.9.
Missouri � 23.9.
Alabama � 23.6.
Alaska � 23.5.

Here�s where the lack of good federal data haunts us. It�s hard to find
solid gun ownership rates. The RAND Corporation, a non-profit research
organization, has tried and published data on average gun ownership by
state between 2007 and 2016.

All of those states with the highest gun death rates are among the ones
with the highest gun ownership rates.

Mississippi � 50% of adults live in a household with a gun.
Louisiana � 48%.
Wyoming � 59%.
Missouri � 48%.
Alabama � 50%.
Alaska � 59%.

Where there are fewer guns, there are fewer gun deaths. The states with
the lowest gun death rates in 2020, per the CDC (alongside the percentage
of homes with a gun in 2007-2016, per RAND) were:

Hawaii � 3.4 (8% of adults live in a household with a gun).
Massachusetts � 3.7 (10%).
New Jersey � 5 (8%).
Rhode Island � 5.1 (11%).
New York � 5.3 (14%).

The advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, which endorses stronger gun
laws, takes the CDC data ongun deathsper 100,000 residents and puts that
alongside each state�s gun laws. The states with lower gun violence
ratesare mostly among the states with the strongest gun laws.

Conversely, with the exception of Louisiana, the states with the highest
gun death rates and highest gun ownership rates are among the states
Everytown says have the most lax gun laws.
Most gun deaths are suicides

Obviously mass shootings can happen anywhere, as we saw earlier this
month in Buffalo, New York, and this week in Uvalde, Texas.

But most gun deaths do not involve a mass shooting. Most gun deaths are
suicides. In 2020, 54% of gun deaths in the US were suicides, which are
far less likely to get sustained public attention, according to a Pew
Research Center analysis of CDC data.

CNN wrote in 2019 about the rising suicide rate and a study published in
the journal JAMA Network Open that found higher suicide rates in rural
areas � and, in cities, if there was a gun shop in the neighborhood.
Cities often have higher gun violence rates than states

Chicago does have a horrifically high murder rate, although the guns
there often come from a neighboring state.

There are higher murder rates in other cities, and they�re often in
places with more lax gun laws, like Jackson, Mississippi. Read this CNN
dispatch about murders in Jackson. It is heartbreaking.

According to Everytown�s analysis of FBI data, the cities with the
highest gun homicide rates in 2020 were all in states with lax gun laws:

Jackson, Mississippi � 69 gun homicides per 100,000 people.
Gary, Indiana � 64.
St. Louis � 50.
New Orleans � 48.
Memphis, Tennessee � 47.

Baltimore, where the gun laws are relatively strict, was next.
Murder rates rising

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a rise in gun violence, and in January,
a CNN analysis found 10 of the nation�s most populous cities set homicide
records last year, mostly because of guns. The cities were: Philadelphia;
Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; Portland, Oregon; Memphis,
Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; Milwaukee; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and
Tucson, Arizona.

In the large cities hardest hit by gun violence, there are areas that are
relatively untouched compared with areas that are under attack, as
researchers from the Brookings Institution found in a report published
last month.

In Chicago, they said, gun homicides in 2019 and 2020were concentrated in
neighborhoods far from the city center �that have long suffered from
severe disinvestment as a result of white flight, and are now centers of
concentrated poverty with predominantly Black residents.�

In other words, it�s generations of neglect and division that help drive
the murder rate in cities. All these deaths � rural suicide, urban murder
and mass shootings everywhere � have one thing in common: guns.

threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon

knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the
President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the

Presidency; Threats Against Former Presidents; and Certain Other Secret
Service Protectees
The Counterterrorism Section of the National Security Division has
supervisory authority over 18 U.S.C. §§ 871 and 879 cases. As great
caution must be taken in matters relating to the security of the persons
protected by 18 U.S.C. § 871, United States Attorneys are encouraged to
consult with the Counterterrorism Section (CTS) of the National Security
Division when they have doubts on the prosecutive merit of a case. For
the same reason, dismissal of complaints under 18 U.S.C. § 871, when the
defendant is in custody under the Mental Incompetency Statutes (18
U.S.C. §§ 4244, 4246), requires approval from CTS. In other cases,
United States Attorneys must consult prior to dismissing a count
involving, or entering into any sentence commitment or other case
settlement involving a § 871 charge.

PHOENIX –David Michael Hanson, 41, of Phoenix, was arrested on Wednesday
for making online threats against the President and Vice-President.
Hanson was charged by Federal criminal complaint on Tuesday with five
counts of Threats Against the President and Successors to the Presidency
and five counts of Interstate Communication of Threats.

The complaint alleges that in November and December of 2023, while
living in Arizona, Hanson used a social media platform to post threats
to murder the President and Vice President of the United States. On
November 19, 2023, Hanson posted online a series of threatening
statements including one that stated, “#joeAndKamala I’m asking you to
resign on Monday your alternative is death brutally murdered.” After the
U.S. Secret Service spoke to Hanson and warned him that it was a Federal
crime to post such threats, on December 23, 2023, Hanson posted another
series of similar threats aimed at the President and Vice-President.

Each count of Threats Against the President and Successors to the
Presidency carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of
up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Each count
of Interstate Communication of Threats carries a maximum sentence of
five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of
supervised release.

A complaint is simply a method by which a person is charged with
criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is
presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes
guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Illinois’ problem is the porous borders it shares with states with much
laxer gun laws. If it could clamp down on the illegal gun migrants pouring
across from those lawless states (though I’m sure some of them are good
people), it would make its own people much safer.

Compare Massachusetts and Hawaii, which have similarly strict gun laws,
that work.
