For at least the fourth time, nominating by popular vote in primaries is very
recent. Until 1824 Congress nominated the candidates. After that, state party
bosses put up names for nomination and national party bosses selected from that
list. That's why they held conventions. There was minimal public input.

Voting in primaries was first proposed around the turn of the 20th century but
did not become common until after the Great Depression.

For the purposes of nominating, the People didn't matter until the Democrats
began doing it after WWI. The practice didn't become common until after the
Great Depression and as late as 1968, candidates were still being nominated
without a primary.

Pothead's point is valid, and all the leftists can do is make
ridiculous denials.

Primaries do not determine who
a party nominates. For much of our
history they didn't even exist.
Even in 1952 only a dozen states
bothered to hold presidential
primaries and Eisenhower lost most
of those. It was voting at the
Convention that mattered.
