Wine is not an app, it's an implementation of Microsoft's GUI and
whatnot that runs under Unix-like OSes. I'm using it to run Forte
Agent to write this, as we speak. It doesn't "barely work", it's a
remarkable way to run Windows apps, without being true emulation.

Works well enough that proton is built on it, which runs
Windows games, which are applications that would be most
punishing for WINE's capabilities.

Depending on the game, it can be faster on proton, thanks to DXVK.

I think ol' DFS is still stuck in the Linux of 5, 10 years ago.

Yep, but DFS believes that Linux and FOSS have to be inferior, he has
to come up with reasons why that is, and yet it never pans out.

It's Wed morning @ 9:53am EDT so the winehq.org site is down, but
Codeweavers says:

They have a tier of ratings - Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Garbage -
which proves it doesn't work at all like they claim.

Yeah right.

And if you want a real laugh, try to register for the Wine forums.
Instead of a captcha verification, they ask an esoteric technical
question that only Wine expert users would know the answer to. Absurd.

I'll pass on Wine for another couple years, at least.

Depends what you're trying to do. I am not trying to run games or M$
Office, or something.

It works remarkably well, for me, although admittedly I have a good
computer.

It does work well usually, but some stuff I'd like to use break on it
(like some unity steam games require a weird command line option to make
it work, and byond)

DFS has a habit of obfuscating just how great FOSS/Linux can be, Wine
took time to mature to be sure, but it has, running this app with it
is trivial, and it is the foundation for Proton for more advanced
uses. DFS ends up sounding like a shill for M$.
